P2 Card issues

I'm really interested in upgrading to an HD camera. I love what I've seen of the HVX, yet I rue and lament the pricey P2 cards. My other choice would be a JVC HD100 simply because of the cost effectiveness.

I have some questions to guide my decision:
1. How long does it take to dump the contents of a full 4GB P2 card via firewire to a computer? (I would probably shoot 720/24p)

2. What is the best way to output the video for a film fest submission?

3. Does the JVC have compatibility problems with FCP? (I tried downloading what little sample vids I could find and they didnt work w/o converting them. afterwards they looked like crap.)

4. Does a firestore drive store thumbnailed clips for easy access like the P2 cards?

Thanks

It takes about 1 min per GB. So it'd take a 4GB card 4 minutes (approx).

They usually ask for a DVD these days, region free. And some festivals ask for a VHS backup copy in case they can't play the DVD.

I don't know that one because I've never edited HD100 footage.

As it's not released no one can say, but it's supposed to have that functionality.

Currently FCP does not support the JVC's 24p mode. There are plugin programs like Lumiere to address that. FCP (and Avid) only support the JVC's 30P mode.

Actually, they are not so pricey once you factor in long-term use, and the fact you will never have to purchase tape (DVCPRO HD tapes are very expensive), or buy film and pay for processing, dailies, telecine, stock for telecine, etc.

So how are people backing up/storing their footage? Hard drives?
Thanks,
Curtis

I back up my cards to a DVD-r. Just so happens DVD-R's are the exact same capacity as each P2 card. and they only cost 25 cents.

Youre not talking about the cheapo CrapUSA DVDs are you? Anybody have DVDs that failed from 5-8 years ago? How long can DVDs be archived reliably? Only experience I had was a DVD of Happiness that looked clean but crapped out halfway through. Never got to see the happy ending...
