P2 Card downloading through HVX...

Hi, this'll be my first post here, so I hate to have to ask a long-winded question...

I just got an HVX (like, yesterday), and I've been playing a little bit, but now I'm trying to get the footage off the P2 onto my Mac Pro. I really didn't expect there to be a problem here; I figured I'd install a driver, connect the camera with a FireWire cable and I could just move the files to the computer, no problem. It's not doing that at all. In fact, I can't figure out why it's doing absolutely nothing.

I installed the P2 drivers (the recent ones, released 1-29-2008), and it didn't appear to do anything. When I first hooked up the camera, and put it into 1394 Host mode, it recognized the HVX and didn't recognize the P2 card (it said "Unknown Device"), but after installing the drivers, it still says "Unknown Device." I tried installing the old drivers because I thought perhaps this was an issue with Tiger, since I haven't installed Leopard on this machine just yet. It won't even let me install the old drivers; it just says "there is nothing to install" whenever I try to.

I don't have a P2 Store, and that seems to be all the information I can find (about people having problems with a P2 Store, not with connecting the camera directly to the computer). I'm not even sure if I'm looking at the right place in the manual, because it's telling me to format a hard drive to do it. That doesn't sound right at all, because I distinctly remember being able to do everything in OS X, and not have to format anything, but I can't seem to find any information about how to set this seemingly simple thing up. (I'm looking at pages 85-86 in the manual; should I be looking somewhere else?)

I used one of these in my Documentary class, but we checked out P2 Stores with the cameras, and when I connected that, I was able to capture footage directly into FCP. Now, nothing seems to be working the way it did before, and the only differences I can see is that I'm not using a P2 Store, and that I have a Mac Pro, which is Intel, while they had G5s (I think) in Doc class, which obviously were PPC.

Does anyone know a quick resource online or a page number in the manual or "The HVX Book" about what the setup should look like for transferring these files directly from the P2 card, through the camera to my HD.

Thanks in advance!

Update: I just found the P2 workflow section. I didn't even realize it was there before, but I did search and kept coming up with stuff specifically pertaining to problems with the P2 Store, not what I'm trying to do... I'll go over that and see if it works. Sorry... kind of a noob to this.

Try setting the mode to 1394 device. Then go to VCR mode and hold down the button for 5 seconds or so. The camera screen will turn blue and the card should then pop up in Finder.

Edit:Looks like you found the answer yourself

Well, not exactly; it's still not working. I installed the P2CMS software and updated the camera's firmware, but no help there. The Mac Pro already has the latest firmware. I'll try what you're suggesting, but I thought it was the other way around, that you'd want it in host mode... I'll report back after I try it...

Update again: I actually got it to find the P2 card... I had to have it in 1394 device mode, like you said. Thanks. I thought that 1394 device mode was for if I was capturing tape, not transferring files. I don't get it, but I guess now I know how to make it work. Thanks again.

It's not necessary to install any drivers at all on a Mac Pro if all you want to do is connect to transfer P2 cards. Here's my process:

1. Set the camera to 1394 Device (not Host), then Camera OFF.
2. Mac Pro ON, connect Firewire cable to Mac Pro first.
3. Connect Firewire cable to camera, then turn camera on.
(Do not ever connect the cable while the camera is on or you may fry your 1394 port))
4. Put camera in MCR mode, then hold down the button until the camera switches to PC mode. You should see the screen indicate 1394 going from Disconnect to Connect
5. You should also see a new drive called NO NAME appear in the Finder.

You can now drag the CONTENTS folder and the Lastclip.txt file to any folder. The lastclip.txt file is crucial.

If this doesn't work for you, you have a system problem, or the camera is defective.

Yeah, I figured that out. I was reading the wrong part of the manual, and it said to be in Host mode, so I didn't think to change it. Plus, everything I was finding online was about the P2 Store, not connecting through the camera. I got it working just fine now. Thanks guys.
