P2 Card Adapter Interface?

Hi Guys,

It's been a while since I've posted anything or even checked in here. I got side tracked
and have been shooting but not with my camera. I got into long distance precision shooting
with my Remington SS 5R MilSpec .308. Man, that's another money pit... But I digress.

Has there been any new developments gear wise for dumping the P2 cards into the PC?
Last time I checked, there was an internal card interface you could plug the P2 card into.

**Do they make a P2 card interface that has either USB2 or Firewire on the other end to plug
into the PC?

Thanks in advance.

Best.

Mark

I've been looking for something as well. Anything cheaper? knock off brand maybe? I'd really like a 3.25 inch bay one that plugs into internal usb. 350 bucks seems overpriced for a port that is on any old laptop.

considering you can buy an old G4 powerbook with a pcmcia slot for about the same price as that panasonic reader. YES i agree the pcd2 is overpriced for what it is.

sadly, its the ONLY device of its kind : (
but it works QUITE WELL : )

I purchased the new Panny card reader. and is worth it.
I had a 6 day shoot using 3 p2 camera's. I also bought a used laptop for $125.00 from my CPA. I already owned a laptop with PCMIA. So no holdup in downloading.:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I have a laptop that can read the cards as well. The transfer time to an external hd and then to my desktop is crazy though. I need a better solution for my desktop. I got an i7 950 with 12 gigs of ram and dual Nvidea 480 gfx. (I know the gfx is gaming, not workstation, but they do a very nice job) The best part is the 6 drive raid. (not including OS drives) Hooking the camera up to the computer via usb or fire wire makes the camera a huge bottle neck.

@mule...since it still is slow usb 2.0 does the Panny card reader go faster then offloading direct from the camera?

If that's the computer you've got, why not get a $70 PCI-slot PCMCIA reader, and transfer those cards off at six or seven gigabytes per minute?

I could, but the only slot I got left is a pci express 2.0. I haven't gotten a strait answer, but i thought a pci card doesn't work in pci-e slotts. I haven't found any pci-e pcmia readers. But yea, that would be the way to go for any of us desktop users with an open pci slot. My dual gfx take up a total of 4 slots. My additional raid card takes up one two. My media 6 drive raid can write at 300MB/sec so it would be nice for the p2 cards to be the bottle neck. (they are 50MB/s right?...i'm talking bytes not bits) this might be a good solution for the original poster though.

The Panasonic PCD35 is a PCI-e reader, five slots, and is the fastest reader going. Might be a good match with your system, performance-wise, you should be able to offload a 64GB card in about seven minutes flat with that. It's not $70, obviously, but it does move.

Sonnet's QIO is a PCIe reader, but its P2 performance is pretty pathetic; they rate it at 25MB/sec. Don't know why it's 1/6th the speed of the PCD35, but it is.

I like you last suggestion. Your first suggestion would be awesome, but cost almost as much as my editing system. (Home build, not avid certified) I was also considering the Ultra DigiDrive. It is an esata or usb 2.0 PCMCIA reader. it does not say it specifically works with p2. Theoretically esata should allow 150 MB/s. P2 cards are just fancy PCMCIA cards right? Cost 60 bucks. I think I might get both the pcie one and the esata one and report back which works the best. If either works its 300 bucks cheaper then the Panny one for the same thing.

Also, Wanted to apologize to the original poster if i kinda took over you thread. I didn't mean to do that.

If it doesn't specifically say it *is* compatible with P2, then you shouldn't assume that it is. Most of those cheap adapters are not compatible, that's why Amtron makes a point of specifying which ones of theirs are, and furthermore, even when they're compatible, they're only compatible on Windows or G4/G5 Macs, not on Intel Macs.
