P2 . . . Buy now get one free!

I have an HVX with P2’s on pre-order with Rush. I think following the P2 issue has begun to affect my sleep . . .

HVX-200. (without interchangeable lenses), So what . . . just choose between the Canon or the other camera.

“the footage, the footage!!” Okay, settle down now Tattoo . . . we have yet to see the recorded footage from the HVX. But, is there anyone here that doesn’t think that Panasonic hasn’t taken, at the very least, the same ingredients from the DVX100A and passed them along to the new camera? Some may think I’ve been blinded by the hype, but not really . . .

I have gained confidence over the past 16 months that I have owned and become proficient with my DVX100A. I have salivated over the work many of you have shared, and then learned I could accomplish similar results with mine. It’s no secret that Panasonic (who apparently does not rush to market with unfinished product) caught the competition with their pants down (causing Sony to have to deliver an XL-2) with a camera (DVX100/A) that was an instant winner right out of the box. I am betting my hard earned bucks that the HVX will enjoy similar history.

The question for me and perhaps others that expect to be shooting a lot of DVC-PRO, and not HD centers squarely on the P2 cost of acquisition. Best, if not only option right out the gate, is going to be P2. How am I going to feel a few months after my package arrives, when the 16 gig chips and the new Firestore device debut? Probably not too well . . .

Granted, some people may never purchase any P2’s. Other options are forthcoming. If I owned P2 technology (and had not yet licensed it elsewhere) but wanted to get a bunch of them out there . . . what would I do to stimulate the market? Would I drop the price? Nope, that’ll be market driven and take care of itself as chip performance development matures. Would I offer a rebate (on the P2)? No, because that would have about the same effect as lowering the price while artificially maintaining a meaningless “manufacturers suggested retail” price point.

I’m really most interested in what you folks think would take the sting out of paying for a (while somewhat discounted) premium for a proprietary evolving technology. I think that a really good approach for this manufacturer who presumably wishes to get bunch of them out there would be to offer some sort of upgrade path on the P2’s. A “buy now and get a free upgrade when available” would surely solidify my purchase plans and perhaps motivate a lot of others presently taking the “wait and see” approach to P2.

Yeah, I know, this may not be realistic, but maybe some variation (trade in both 8 gig P2’s for a replacement 16?) might provide the stimulus needed to help the technology achieve a firm foothold in a market with other workflow possibilities.
