If one were to use the P2 for doing an offline edit, how does one, without tapes, prepare for an online edit? What would you use for the reference? Or do you have to do your full online edit only on the machine you dump the P2s onto?
You might be able to change the import option for the P2 media. But you would still have to put all those raw P2 files somewhere. I've only played with the P2 clips that I got off of here and I can't remember if FCP gave me the option as to the import quality. You could just get some removable drives and swap out the media that you would need. So the real answer seems like to get more storage and save yourself the trouble of going back and forth with the offline and online clips.
Is there a specific reason you'd want to do an offline? With DVCPRO-HD you can edit multiple streams of online footage in realtime on even a mediocre Mac, so what would be the appeal of doing it offline?
Well, I was wondering if a system was not capable of onlining HD and had to hire someone to do an offline edit first. I personally own Final Cut HD on a Mac G4 with Dual 800 procc. But I have been hearing that FCP is not really able to handle a 1:1 output of HD at this point. Maybe that is not true, but if one HAD TO do an offline edit first, would you have to just use the storage device (the external harddrive) as the "tapes" and deliver an EDL and the hard drive to the online editor?
