First I want to start and say that I am an old Avid guy that only edited in SD back in the day. After a long hiatus from the editing arena I am back to helping my wife with Final Cut Studio 3 while she edits together HPX170 and 7D footage. Back in the SD world it seemed so much simpler, now I find myself quite behind the times and trying to catch up with the new HD frame sizes and codecs.
Here is what we are shooting:
Two HPX 170 shooting 720 24pn and a 7D B-roll shooting 1080 24p.
Everything is L&T into FCP, HPX using DVCPro HD and the 7D with the Eos Plugin to ProRes 422.
She has the timeline set up as Pro Res and that is where I start to get lost. Since there is more footage in DVCPro HD shouldn't we be editing in that and not changing everything to Pro Res? I also wonder about the resolution differences between the footage, when I dump a 1080 clip on to a 720 timeline what is happening with the frame?
Maybe everything we are doing is wrong, it wouldn't surprise me. There have been issues with dropping frames during playback even though the media drive is a OWC esata raid 5 tower. That leads me to thinking that there are RT rendering issues with mixing the formats. I have not spent much time at all on FCP so I am really at the limit of my knowledge.
If anyone can guide me in the right direction that would be much appreciated. I am even looking for training guides, manuals, and workflow examples elsewhere, not only to further my own knowledge but to also be able to teach her.
