P-2 media question

Hello, Just purchased the HVX-200a. Like so many I've been a tape guy for 21 years.
I'll be using this camera mostly outside....Shooting stories for NBC and PBS. I will shoot everything on the P-2 cards at 720p. My plan is to dump all my video via the camera to a DELL laptop (windows XP Pro).

Then I will take it from the Laptop out to an external hard drive and send it to my editor in Atlanta.

I invite any and all tips, suggesstions and help from anyone on the best way to handle this new adventure.

Glad to be a new member and look forward to sharing helful info on the HVX-200a.

Best wishes to all,

Might get more attention and hopefully some good tips. There is a actually a sub-forum all about workflow. So, just reading through the plethora of info there, you'l most likely get the answers you seek. I too am in the process of making the switch from tape to P2 (same cam actually). So been pouring over all the good info located there. Good luck.

Welcome to tapeless media! There is one important thing that you need to remember when moving the media from the P2 card, which is to make sure that you move each of the "lastclip" files from the card over to the computer. This file helps (if you are using FCP) FCP to know which files are which after they have been logged and transferred. The file is easy to replace (make a copy of another one, replace the file name with the name of the last clip in the folder), however it can be an annoyance when you are editing if for some reason FCP cannot find your files. Been there.

I shoot everything at 720 24pn, so you can get about 2.6 minutes per GB of storage on the card. I believe shooting 720 24p gets you a little less (closer to 2.3 minutes per gig). Not a huge difference, but if you're running out of space and there's no where to dump, the extra space might help.

On the HPX170 you can change your scene settings, turn off the camera, and come back to your settings having not changed. On the HVX200 I have had the issue of changing the settings, then coming back to the camera having changed them. (IE me putting it to filmcam and it be changed back to videocam). Make sure to check your settings if you change your camera off. Not sure it is a problem that can be fixed, but I have had this problem with 3 separate HVX200p/a cameras.

Best of luck with your new camera! It's a great tool!

Edit: Fixed a typo that would have been misleading.
