Oversaturated reds

I've noticed the footage from my gh1 really saturates red, even when i set it to -2. It becomes quite a distraction if the object has a large surface area as it just stands out like dogs nuts. I shoot in custom smooth with everything down -2 except sharpness.

Is there any tips or tricks to reduce the red in video on the camera like you can do in stills?

Also green isn't really green either, something commander spike noticed. havent seen him on here in a while, must have stuck with his 5d =) Any tips or tricks to bring up the green in camera or even post?

cheers.

Maybe try setting the color back to zero instead of minus 2. That may put the colors more in balance so that the reds don't seem as saturated in comparison. Otherwise, the Nostalgia setting desaturates things quite a bit. And the Nature setting has the best true greens.

I think he has been banned.

banned..ha that would explain things.

I try to manual white balance but not sure if i am getting it spot on. had a quick play and your right it does really influence the reds so maybe thats where i am mainly going wrong.

gonna try and shoot in nostalgia and see if it is happy to be cranked up in post.

as for the green it seems to do ok with ligher shades and nature does help. It just doesn't represent dark greens well? tested on a "robbin hood" green cap and i end up getting turquoise through all the presets. standard came closest though. playing with white balance didnt do much.

also noticed a slight difference in shades from the evf and lcd. anyone else notice this?

yep been using manual wb. it might just be that I am not setting it correctly, no idea how to. I just go by my formula, if its sunny/warm i throw it down till its fairly neutral, if its indoors or overcast/cold i bump it up abit.

You can also fine-tune the colour balance between amber-blue & green-magenta in a four-point diagram. Check page 85 in the manual for details.

Just to be fair to the GH1, greens are notoriously difficult to reproduce on video. Even the best cameras often reproduce green with a yellow-ish tinge. And I should ask: what monitor are you viewing this on to evaluate the footage? I ask because many big screen TV's pump up the reds.
The LCD and viewfinder on the camera are not reliable to make fine judgments about color and contrast.
Anyway, sounds like you have the right idea by just experimenting with different controls and figuring out what works for you.

thanks Marti forgot all about that. helps a fair bit in getting the greens.

dvbrother - im just looking at it on my 24"lcd monitor which i think is fairly balanced...well i think it is. as for the greens im just going by whats showing on the EVF LCD vs what I see with my eye.

but yeah gonna have to spend a day test shooting to get more familiar and see whats best for me.

thanks for the input fellas.
