This thead just got closed, Due to COVID-19 there is no NAB 2020. The reason given was that it had become too political.
I disagree with this decision, and I have seen it happen in a few other threads. The thread had a lot of interesting information about the spread of the coronavirus, and a few jokes in between. I really didn't even see that much politics.
No Politics is one of the Eight P's in this Forum's Guidelines. I kind of get it, in the extreme case. No one wants your stereotypical flamewar about the current president or something like that.
But what is the reason for those guidelines? Is it because they are off-topic? No, the Cafe section lets us talk about non-camera stuff, nothing wrong with that. Is is because politics are bad? No, we need to understand politics to vote properly and be active citizens. Isn't the reason that politics is banned is because people become mean to each other? Please tell me if I'm wrong.
Well, if that's the case, the meanest I've ever seen people is when they were here talking about cameras! Banning politics is a blunt instrument. If you simply banned Personal Attacks, and enforced it as strictly as you have been enforcing Politics, then you wouldn't need to ban Politics. People could have thoughtful, intellectual discussions about whatever, and peace would ensue.
If you want to ban politics in general, I'm not going to argue. The problem comes when you then define "politics" so broadly --- as it seems you did in the thread you just closed. It drains the fun out of this forum --- and usefulness too. It's good to engage in intellectual debate (as long as there are no personal attacks) with people I sort of have gotten used to. I don't think anyone here wants to go join a political forum (that itself sounds like a hellscape) to ever be able to talk about the FCC, copyright, or the government's handling of the coronavirus. We want to talk about it with people we've become comfortable with because of the conversations we've had about other stuff.
