Overlaying the same image on top

I have a shot where an unwanted person wonders in from the right hand side of the frame and then wanders out.

The shot is of the protagonist walking from the left to the right of the screen.

Is it possible to overlay a segment of the clip only to the right hand side (when the background was clear) to replace the unwanted person walking in - and then revert back to the original clip so the protagonist can still walk to the right of the frame?

Hope I explained it properly,

Cheers guys

It is a static shot (no camera movement)? If so, then yes, it can be done relatively easy in FCP, but depending on the footage, it'll probably come out better if you do it in AE. Post a screengrab of the shots and we'll have much more info to go on.

Cheers for the response Ryan.

I've actually opted for another shot in lieu of spending time overlaying.

One question though, I'm currently editing the footage at 2K (RedOne Camera) - reduced from 4K. I was told when completing the editing (Online editing), I can export it at it's full 4K resolution.

I'm about halfway through edit but I've just been told that I may have had to tell Final Cut that it's an "Off-line" edit, is that the case? Or am I able to still export it at 4K?

Cheers
