My friend just messaged me, he is operator assistant at 1 local project, 1st time production with sony f55 with raw recorder. and today during filming its already stopped working twice because of overheating, and also refused to playback once.....

it kind of sucks, i kind of planed to buy it, and hoped i could trust it during production, did not expect i could face same issues as with red cameras

anyone had any problems with it?

Regards

I sure hope its isolated incident, I just got a RAW recorder for my F55.

In the past 18 months however I have not really heard of any major complaints on the R5 in general. Might have been an issue with that particular R5, check with rental house or Sony if still under warranty.

I have had my raw recorder since day 1, and use it extensively, and have NEVER had any issues with it whatsoever (or the camera for that matter).

I had a long hot, humid day (95F+, 70% humidity) in Aruba last fall where the fan gave me an error. Camera kept shooting, mind you. It just warned me that the "Fan Is Stopped"

Freaked me out, but we had lunch break and it never came back for the rest of the week under the same conditions.

I don't think that the cooling system in the 5/55 is super robust (like an Alexa), but I suspect this prob your friend is having is because a very unique situation somehow, or maybe the thing sucked in a lot of dust on the previous job and that's gumming up the cooling.

I wouldn't pass on the camera because of this. Overall I'd say it's a lot better in this regard than, say, a Red.
