Overcranking undercranking question from Barry's book?

I have the book it is great but my question to Barry or anyone who knows is can I shoot 24pa and achieve this or just 24p? In the books he talks about shooting in 24p and working in a 24p timeline not 24pa? Just wondering if I could use 24pa since I mainly use that mode?

thanks

You wouldn't shoot in 24pA for overcranking a DVX; you'd either use 30P or 60i depending on how much of a slow-mo effect you want.

So you'd shoot your main footage in 24pA, and for your slow-mo shots you'd switch to 30p for mild slow-mo, or 60i for very slow-mo.

Opps I miss typed that but I can shotot in 24pa for main then switch to 60i but capture everyting in a 24pa timeline (23.978 timeline avid) right?

Thanks Barry for answering my questions.

I don't know quite how you'd do it in Avid, but I believe MichaelP posted a workflow paper about how to accomplish this in Avid. Might search around a tad, or look on his 24p.com site, or post a private message to him.

I guess what I mean is the over/under crank method should work just fine for a 24pa workflow right?

Thanks again Barry.

The timeline should definitely be 24p. In FCP, you would capture the 24pa footage with advanced pulldown removal, but you would capture the 60i or 30p footage without. I don't know why Barry thinks you're using Avid, but since he's usually right about everything then you should ask in the Avid forum. If by some chance Barry is wrong, and you're using FCP, then you should get Noah's DVD ("24p Digital Post Production with Final Cut Pro and the Panasonic DVX100").

I figure he's using Avid because in post #3 he said "but capture everyting in a 24pa timeline (23.978 timeline avid) right?"

Yep I'm using Avid but in Avid you have choice of 24p timeline or 23.976p timeline(advance pulldown removal) (24pa). I'm assuming the over/under crank method would be ok in either timeline right?

Thanks Barry and Iain. Yeah Iain Noah's dvd looks great wish it was for avid.
