Overcompensated for Full Sun Help!

Ok my inexperience with the DVX has gotten me into trouble here. Shot an event in 24ap shutter speed 1/60 in full sun. I used builtin ND as cam suggested at 1/64 and also used zebras. My viewfiner was also washing out since I did not have a hood so I was relying on the zebras and stopped the manual iris down too far. The results are heartbreaking. Guess I should have gone all automatic but was afraid of too much light..

Does anyone know how to salvage the footage either through gamma or color correction?

Yellowdog the footage is too dark not too hot. I was worried it was going to be too hot and stopped it down too far. Did not have a full understanding of zebras and kept irising down to all but eliminate them.

John I'd post a screen grab if I knew how.

Ah good! You should be able to salvage the footage then (at least moreso than if it had blown out). Please do post a grab if/when you can :) as John asked.

Ah easy enough to solve :)

What software are you using? What you want to do is get access to a function called "levels." It displays the image data spread out from light to dark. There will be a gap at the right hand side (the light side). What you want to do is stretch the data out so it fills the full range. This can be done by moving the slider (or other means of adjustment) down to where to data begins.

Hope that made some sense. I'm really out of it today!

Hi Ops

Shaw is correct; go into your NLE and adjust the levels. I'd reccomend using your Videoscopes and keeping the highlights just under 100 IRE and the Blacks at 0 IRE

I'm in the process of learning FCPHD so I'll find the levels as you suggested and see what I can do. It appears as if it is out of focus too... live and learn I guess. For future reference in full sun what settings would you recommend?
Thanks John and Shaw.

I have soooo much to learn. Guess I better jump over to the FCP section and do some more catching up. thanks again for your color corrected examples!
