Output Settings in FCP

Hi,

I am using the HVX for a series of web promos for a client. I shot them in DV Squeeze on tape.

I edited them in FCP 5.1.1 as DV Anamorphic.

When I output them, they look tall and skinny as they want to output as 720x480.

I tried outputting them with QT Coversion at 320x180 with the checkmark "fit within dimensions" checked. And they seem to be outputting at 320x220, still a bit tall.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

And when the client gets the file on DVD for their summit, will the squeezed 720x480 automatically unsqueeze on the TV monitors?

If there's another thread that answers this, please point me to it.

Thanks,
Ken

P.S. I searched "Output 16:9" and "16:9 DV" and there were no results.

kenneth, i work in pal's word, but I think it's the same.
the point is your final plataform. If you will deliver a dvd for the client, you just have to render yor anamorphic sequence and get quicktime with anamorphiic distortion.
after that, you render the mpeg 2 in compressor under the preset 16:9.
when you import that in dvd studio pro, if your setting are for 16:9, your material will play in the right aspect radio.
the only risk of this is that you depends on one setting of the dvd player your material is gonna be played.
otherwise, the secure solution is compose your anamorphic seq in another 4:3 in final cut with letterbox, and export a final 4:3 quictime.
good luck

On another note, doesnt DVD Studio Pro convert a 16:9 HD sequence from FCP through compressor to a letterboxed SD 4:3? Or is this wrong practice?

Try this:

Export from FCP with Quicktime Conversion as a .mov H.264;720x480. Edit the options, and click on "Size." Where it says somethign about maintainging aspect ratio, choose "Letterbox." (I apologize for being so vague, when I get home I will grab some screenshots.) This will output the video with the black bars present and your film squeezed to perfection. There is also another method I will post when I get home in 45 minutes...

Hope I helped, for the time being,

Thanks everyone. So to recap, it's a 16:9 file shot in HVX on the tape side at "squeeze" mode. It was imported as DV Anamorphic and edited with those settings.

I tried outputting in every one of the choices with Quicktime Conversion (though FCP) and it always made it slightly taller than it should be. And also sometimes I would output it at 320x180 and it would end up being 270x180 (which again made it look a bit taller than usual).

I tried several diffferent size options -- Fit to Dimensions (320x180), Letterbox (320x240), Crop (320x180). All had a tall look.

I finally did get it to work using Export with Compressor. But oddly, the properties say it's dimensions are 320x180 but it appears when it's open at "actual size" to be more like 640x360. So, then I export in QT to 320x180 and I finally have a usable file.

Somehow seems like a convoluted way.

Thanks for all your input!

Kenneth
