F3: Outdated?

Here is a video that I helped work on this summer. (Shot on the F3)

I wrote up a quick little post on my blog about it, if you are interested
you can check it out at www.gforcevideo.com and click on the 'blog' button.
Nice to remember that even with all the new cameras coming out, the
'outdated' ones can still put out some pretty nice work.

Just this June I got a call from a major cable show shooting in Philly looking for 2 F3's for interviews. It's not dead yet, images still stack up nicely against new Sony, Red and the C300.

It's definitely not dead and this video posted recently really shows "its not the camera that matters" : Mbody kickstarter video by pchristoph

Yes, the F3 is very alive and is producing fantastic stories to any screen. I was reflecting on the light gathering microns of the F3 - which is enormous! (Bigger than C300, Epic, and F5/55) and I feel these huge microns have contributed to the personality and quality of the image. It can feel quite analogue and more immersive for storytelling when done properly. My next camera might very well be the F35 (because like the F3) I value the look from the image sensor. I also value the cameras limitations - they are great teachers. I truly believe they can help me to achieve a better result in the end.

Great looking stuff! Still rock'in my F3 along with F55 as well. Saw your Blog, Robert is a very good friend of mine here in Dallas.

Say hi to him from me. It was a fun project and he's awesome to work with.
I've been traveling a ton this summer on shoots but I have some 'behind the scenes'/at work
photos to email him for his website once I get back home to my edit bay.
F3 looks really good, great looking HD video. I think they are undervalued because of
the 4k push.

I'm still very fond of the F3. It may not be 4k (which I can live without), but what other camera offers IQ better than an F3 at it's price? 13.5 stops? Clean 1600/3200 asa? Say what you want about Sony color, but at least the highlights are white and skin looks like skin...

Just made $1250 with mine for 1.5 days in Vegas. It just keeps on paying out. Did almost the same thing weekend before that.

Once again I have to chip in for the F3.
I've been using mine for an ongoing personal project this past week or so and I am amazed at the filmic quality this camera can produce. Slog of course.
I nearly sold the kit earlier this year, the F3, the 18-252 Sony zoom and some other bits and pieces I had for the rig at that time. After working with a close friend as second camera on his film project in Paris back in the Spring, ( "A" camera was a F3 too ), I changed my mind about selling and decided to keep it, keep it and actually add some other support gear to the rig to improve it's overall function. It was a good decision. The much maligned Sony lens actually did very well paired with "A" camera's Cooke 5:1. I am using it again on this current project and finding little or no faults with that piece of glass. And I'm picky…
So the other good thing about this camera is that it's performance and "look" is saving me from jumping on the upgrading merry go round. It's probably going to be the last digital camera I will buy. If and when I want or need more capability in the future, I'll rent. There's going to be plenty of two year old whatever's around in the rental pool.
