Some very early clips since receiving the SLR Magic Anamorphot. Always loved the Cinemascope perspective but never had any experience with it and I felt most solutions were either expensive, rare, required double focusing or had other issues. So I was very excited when SLR Magic announced their anamorphic adapter and initially hoped to use my SLR 25mm CINE lens as the taking lens. Unfortunately the 25mm lens design is not really suitable for use with the adapter and in the absence of any other taking lens, I decided to try my Panasonic 14-45mm lens.
I was amazed at how easy it was to mount the adapter on the lens (there are several very helpful YouTube videos around) and was immediately able to go film, all hand held. I set the lens to about the 20mm mark as that is supposedly very near the wide-focal length limit for m43. Some research about aspect ratios, un-squeezing anamorphic footage in FCP X, and after several wrong turns I was finally able to see the clips in their unfurled glory. The subject matter wasn’t so compelling, but the effect was.
The 14-45mm lens, while functional and having the benefit of IS, is also not really suitable for the task due to the sliding zoom housing that can rapidly extend if the camera is pointed downwards. If I had to, in a pinch, I could certainly use it. I then tried the Panasonic 20mm 1.7. A lovely lens with the adapter, making a wonderfully compact system, but again construction wise, it’s not really suitable for what I want to do. Also perhaps a little too wide for comfort. So while I wait for an alternative, I’m having fun testing it on a variety of other lenses. And ultimately, waiting to place it on the front of a GH4.
Comments welcome.
