'Out-Of-The-Box' Look

I'm looking to make the leap from normal digital video to higher-end HD video, specifically the DVX100a because of the 24p and film 'look'. However, reading a few threads on this forum, it seems a lot of people (who admittedly seem to use it for more professional productions than I will right now) have had to invest a lot of money in different lenses to achieve the look of their films.

Generally speaking, what kind of quality will I get from the DVX100a itself? Will I be able to shoot in widescreen? If someone could give me some images/video as examples of how close to 'film' I can get without any additional lenses/post-production tweaking, that'd be really appreciated.

Jump over to "DVX clips" area for a plethora of different looks. Out of the box the DVX is stunning if properly exposed, set up and focused (or not-focused). I lower the sharpening (detail) to -3 as to get rid of some sharp video-ing.

"from normal digital video to higher-end HD video..."

the dvx100 is NOT HD!!! it shoots at standard mini-dv resolution.

" invest a lot of money in different lenses..."

Not really. usually lenses are limited to:
- wideangle attachemnt
- 16:9 adapter
- 35mm depth of field adapters.

among these, just the last one affects the 'film look' of ur footage. but most of the dvxusers never use those and still get great looking footage. The other lenses affect just the field of view.

what most people would suggest you, though, is to get a good ext mic as soon as you can for good audio performances.

Very hardly you will find same 'out-of-the-box' performance in other cameras for the same price.

The DVX100 can look very good right out of the box. After all it all comes down to lighting!
For some old "out-of-the-box" stills from my first week with the old (non-A) DVX100 take a look at www.techcrew.se/dvx100/ and for some real footage, (just test shooting) take a look at www.techcrew.se/25p.wmv . This is also "out of the box", non CC'd footage from the DVX100 (non A-version). All footage is PAL 25P. I think I've got more clips online somewhere, but at least this is a start!

As pointed out above, the DVX100 is NOT HD!

Hope this helps.
