Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Hey all - I got to give my new DVX100a a nice run through over the last two weeks when me and some friends entered in the NYC midnight movie makeing madness.

We had from 7/31/04 to 8/14/04 to write direct edit and score the following movie.

I used it to really try out some user settings - I shot in 24pa and edited using Avid Xpress Pro with mojo.

If I had to do over I would use lower ped and keep detail at 0

Well any way check out the link - please "right-click" and save target as to download the mov

any feedback is cool -

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

It was o.k. The lighting on the ECU's of the girl could be better. Might be compression though. I thought the resturant scene was done well as far as lighting goes. I thought the lead actors performance could of been stronger. The direction was a little off. The writting needed a stronger ending to put this story to bed.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck with the competition! Let us know how you do!

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Elvis,

Thanks for the 2 cents - Yea I agree with the ending bit - The problem was we only had 2 weeks. That is a challange in and of itself.

But thanks for your input.

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Over all very well done. I enjoyed it. I feel minor things here and there. I didn't care for the girl that much. But the story over shadowed those minor details and kept it moving. When a story bogs down that's when I start seeing the major problems because I'm bored. You didn't you did what a film is suppose to do and that is to entertain me.

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Hey, I did see your film, good production values. The acting could've been better (but we know that two weeks is not enough to get the optimum results).
I think the story could be shorter and the idea of super human hability didn't get through so strongly (which was the assignment), the fact that our MC didn't feel anything wasn't enough for me (For a moment I wanted to see the badass black guy come out with a broken hand), but that's my personal opinion. Editing had a good pace.
Overall, I liked the movie and wish you guys the best of lucks.
Last year my team made it as a finalist and I can assure you that the stuff that I have seen so far from this year, including yours is much better than other first round finalists from 2003.
We are in the Musical Heat (What a *****!), Hopefully we'll make it to the next round, we managed to pull it off, had it not been for Razorhead Music (My friend Carlo), I think we would've never made it. Those guys rock!.
I'll post our piece ASAP. In the meantime good luck and hopefully we'll get to meet in NYC in October.

Cheers
Ecoloco

Great Work man.

Was this a single Camera shoot. Particularly the Restaurant (Diner) scene ?

Thanks,

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Amusing little short. I still wish for a more satisfying ending, but understand that you were under a time restraint.

The editing was tight for the most part, helping the story move along despite the sparse use of music and the adequate (but not especially memorable) acting.

How did you get the dart to stick in the guy's back? It looks like he was wearing something under his shirt, but I don't know if I'd be able to trust someone else to throw a target at my back like that ... please tell me that was done in post! :o

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Ecoloco - Thanks for the feedback - And if I see you in NY - I'll buy you a beer. With this being our first time working together (the team that is) it was a challange for us to put the story together that we did. I found out about the compitition the Tuesday before so we had to overnight our form and everything. We had fun putting it together, but yea you are right about not being able to get the superhuman thing (which I voiced to the team)

As far as the shoot - all one camera the DVX100a (which was its first break-in) I learned a lot about that camera over the last 3 weeks.

The dart was actually thrown into his back he was wearing a piece of stryaphone. And yea there was 3 takes that "Mark" missed and hit him for real.

Thanks for all the feedback - its nice to know how your work is being viewed.

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

I think it's really awesome and funny. Congrats!

The only thing I didn't like was the audio. All the sound sounded like it was coming from the on board mic on the camera. What did you use?

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Must have hurt getting a dart in the back!! I wish my actors are that dedicated to take 3 shots hie hie hie !!

thanks for answering my question!

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Pretty cool -- I don't think you need to make excuses for it.

I think there are some typos in your end credits though. I noticed "charactors" at a glance.

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Well here is a cool little video -

The making of our project - one little note the making of was shot with a XL1 so its kinda cool to see some of the scenes put together with both the DVX and XL1.

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Sam, I really hope you guys win your heat. very nice documentary, it really shows the effort and time you guys put into it. We didn't shoot a thing 'cause we were so focused in the freaking musical. The making of that was an adventure in itself, but I'll tell you about that later. Again Kudos to you and your team. Good luck and the clock is ticking, we'll talk on sunday.

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Nice one Sam, I really enjoyed watching your short. Great use of camera angles and cuts. The lighting was very good and I thought the lead guy fitted the role nicely. I second that comment made earlier about the sound being a bit thin, something to bear in mind for your next piece. Good luck to you.

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

Thanks alot for the complaments - -

And Ecoloco - I know you guys should win your heat - I havn't seen anything from ours but in 2 days we will know something!!

Re: Our NYC Midnight Madness 2004 submission

hey, I wish you guys the best of luck, I was pretty entertaining for the most part. I think that "character" is mispelled in the end disclaimer.
