Our first test scene!

Michelle and I were up until 4am the day we picked up our HVX. Unfortunately, the way it worked out we weren't going to get any media (firewire cable or tapes (P2 card still hasn't arrived) for days. When the order that had tapes in it came in we stayed up till 4am again. We wanted to shoot something right away so we came up with an idea and went to sleep. It was 11am when we woke up and our lights weren't even ordered! We had about 6 hs of light! So I wrote while she made coffee, and we rushed through it and shot it in five hours. We decided to shoot it in standard definition because this was going to be my first official editing job too!
Needless to say the focus, exposure and cinematography isn't perfect. That's kinda what happens when u work under these circumstances. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Oh! and please don't judge our acting by this :)

Here it is: Vacation (switched for a re-edited version read below)
Don't watch it if you won't comment please, say something, whatever, some suggections are "It blows" "It sucks" and "Shoot yerself", I can take it <<

No, not perfect, but pretty impressive for five hours! Were you using the on camera mic? Sound is OK, especially in the car.

no a $250 Rode NTG-1 straight to the camera, I love that mic, but i can't wait to get my Oktava next Monday.. Goe ahead, say it, it sucks a$$.. I know, but I was trying to figure out the camera as we moved on... the car sounds great, too bad she doesn't work out more though cause she was having a hard time holding it... so we only did a few runs and just one "setup"...

hey man, good for you. This is a fun little scene. i am glad you are getting all the fixn's for the HVX. Looks like you have gotten a bunch a stuff since we met at the LA HVXUSER meeting. Watch your zebras for exposure 105 and 60-70 and use the marker on skin tones exposre. It has really helped my shooting. All the best!

Hey! I can tell who you are!!!! see, pictures for avatars are a great idea! lol
thank you, yes, we are preproducing about 4 projects now with friends... but next up will be profesional grade, I promise I'll tryt at least... expect much much better for sure. Back at the meeting we only had the idea, now whe have the gear and some crap to show for! yay! Michelle needs to learn more so she can help though... it is tough being a 1 man show when u r learning how to use the stuff

needs a little help in the editing department, phone call was a bit slow. have fun with the HVX! i love it and after 6 months havent even made the most of what it has to offer.

I had a nice ping pong going, but then Michelle wanted all of her shots re-shot but she's been so busy that they weren't done right, I just threw them in there and that's what came out, we just don't feel like putting any more effort into this... I wish she'd let me post the original, I'd make her acting look bad but the editing much better...

We'll be shooting more, and we'll actually pre-produce from now on... so expect much better stuff, cinematography editing and acting will all be better (unless I find out that I suck :) )

Great of you two to make something 'complete' like this for the purpose of learning. This way you managed to go through the whole process.
No, it's not great great, but there's also nothing wrong with it, IMHO. I thought the editing was decent, acting was appropriate, audio was inteligable, and cinematography was okay, and even the story & dialogue was cute too. So, absolutely nothing stood out as being subpar or inadequate, which tells me that from now on you can only go on and do better and great things!

Ditto ! Great effort !

I am going to re-edit the phone call to make it less draggy.... and I'll re-post it because your feed-back is inspiring me (to make up for the lack of inspiration that the scene isn't giving me :) )

We got lights now too! Too bad I'll e gone for a week to FL or I'd shoot something new right away!

Yeah, that would be the thing to do to clean it up a bit - cut the phone conversation tighter. I give you credit for doing this though... most people just talk about shooting and never get out there to actually do stuff...

Rendering... I will upload it and change the link.
I just raised the levels on her stuff a bit and massaged a few audio clips. Also, I was told how to select big groups o' clips so I was able to make the phone call a bit quicker... not the same as the original but at least half way there...

I can't wait to shoot HD stuff, I finally shot a few test clips last night with the lights and it looks sooooooooooo much better! too bad bandwith isn't what it should be yet... about 20% done with the rendering, and YouTube takes a good 30 min. to upload, so check back about 3pm pacific standard time!

PS, I'll tell Michelle you guys said she was cute! I know that's what you meant, lol

aghh... dang YouTube! you know, with all the money I pay for that service you'd think...
as of now it is the re-edited version

wow man. you made this a day after getting the camera? impressive. absolutely impressive. not only did you write a cohesive story, but you also made it compelling to watch. when i heard the crash (and saw the flash on the buildings - VERY nice touch) i couldn't help but yelling out "DAMN!!".

is michelle... your significant other? if so, i am sooooo jealous. it doesn't get any better than being with someone who is passionate about your passion. and she's definitely cute.

Nice,

I seen the fire brigade in one of the streets. What was going on?

Mike

That fire truck is there because I didn't have time. lol... We shot all of my stuff in about 40 minutes, and then an other 10 on the re-shoot day which was about 2 hours total, but mostly for Michelle's stuff because we forgot to turn off the fridge! oh, and I have to admit that I also was the biggest a$$hole to her from not being able to handle the pressure, screaming at someone to open up is number one in the list of most-retarded-directing-methods... do not try
If you look at the out-take I included you'll se that I was all go-go-go when my turn came... so when I drove off and I saw the truck I did my job and stayed in character... then in post I figured, what the hell it kinda fits and it will make people wonder, which I think is a great thing in good measure... right?
The re-shoots involved 60% of her stuff without counting the one where we r sitting together (that's when I realized the fridge was on) I wanted to try and give myself more coverage, but once again we started my stuff too late, this time at about 5:15 with a 6:00 sunset...
did the truck bother?

HE HE... yea, thanks, and she sings like a freaking angel :) ! she is something else... gotta hurry up and make some amazing stuff so she doesn't dump my ass... :) she giggled when I told her... too bad she is one of those who can't tell the TV remote from the DVD remote (and they are not new remotes)... that was the challenge... the technical aspect, I mean I had a friend with a DVX (who wouldn't let anyone touch it) I hosted and produced a show shot on XL-1s a while back, and I've been standing in and acting for a while... always bugging the camera crew, sound crew, gaffers, grips, anyone who looks friendly... but I never actually had to do it... I got to play with it for a couple of days without tapes or the firewire cable for DVrack, and my P2 will probably never arrive... so I was 98% focused on the technical aspects... and I blame not having a tripod on the first day for the super soft shots and all else that was upside down on it.... it bothers me to watch it now, but as I was editing it I swear I almost cried of happiness! lol, it's been a long time waiting
