Other than 4:2:2..?

Is there any reason I should go with the HPX170 over the HMC150?
I can't deal with DSLR and not interested in AF100.
I would love the new Canon XF300- but $$$$- that said a new HPX with P2 is darn close to costing the same.

I have been told the HMC is actually a better resolution. But for some reason all the footage I see from the HPX170 has a richness I do not see in the HMC footage. It just has a creamier look. Is that due to the higher bit rate? The 4:2:2?
That said- the whole P2 does worry me. I feel I would be buying into a product at the end of it's run.

Just curious if buying today- would you go with the HPX or the HMC?

I think that a lot of the debate between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 color depends largely on what you plan on doing to the footage after it's shot. If you're doing heavy color grading, 4:2:2 has a clear advantage. Otherwise, the advantages of 4:2:2 aren't nearly as huge.

I see no reason not to buy a P2 at the present time. The technology is proven to be reliable under heavy professional usage, and if people start dumping their HVX and HPX cams, that just means there'll be a lot more cheap used P2 cards on the buy/sell board here :-D

I don't have nearly enough stick-time with the HPX170 to extol its virtues, and I have only briefly handled the HMC-150, so I won't say choose one over the other. Just offering my two cents on P2 and the color space.

I have spent many, many hours researching my upgrade from the 100B. I have sent messages to senior members on this forum, and to other very successful videographers who use the HMC. Users of the HMC sing it's praise, others say the HPX.
Here is what I have concluded.
1. DVCPRO HD/DVCPRO 50 have richer more accurate colors
2. DVCPRO is way easier to edit and quicker to render
3. SD cards require meticulous management during usage and have more fragile circuitry making them unreliable in my eyes.
4. HPX will satisfy the needs of HD and SD clients/shooters
5. HPX has SDI out
6. DVCPRO HD, while an old format when compared to AVCHD, is still being deployed now by NBC and it's affiliates which confirms it's relevance, quality, and reliability.

I will spend significantly more on choosing P2, but will have so much more scope in the type of projects the HPX will be able to deliver, cleaner greenscreen, uncompressed via SDI, a stronger more mallable codec, plus a 5 year warranty are a few attributes that come to mind.

AVCHD/HMC150 gives pretty images, but has yet to prove itself as being in the same truly professional category as the DVCPRO/HPX170.

Don't all yell at me at once now!
