Other Low Cost Camera Options with In Camera Slo-Mo?

Hi all,

Besides the HVX200/200A and HPX170, what other cameras support in camera slow motion at the same price point? I know there are more expensive cameras that do the slow motion thing, but what about at the same price, or less?

What about the HMC150?

What about the GH1?

What about cams from other manufacturers?

Thanks, all!

So I see that the HMC150 supports different frame rates, but I can't figure out in my head if this equates to "in-camera slow motion." If it does, is the slowest slo-mo in the 150 as slow as the slowest slo-mo in the HVX200?

Depends on what you mean by "in-camera slow-mo". If you're talking about the ability to record footage in-camera and then play it back and see it in slow-mo, then no, only the HVX/HPX170 and EX1/EX3 can do that.

But if you're talking about shooting 720/60p and dropping that onto a 24p timeline for perfect frame-accurate slow-mo, then yes there are many cams that can do that, including the HMC150, the GH1, the HMC40, the JVC HM100...

But the big difference is: the HPX170/HVX200A can do it in-camera for immediate slow-mo playback, and they can do it at many different frame rates. The 200/200A have 11 different frame rates, and the 170 has 20 different frame rates. And both of them can be hacked to provide over 36 different frame rates. And the EX1/EX3 have sixty different frame rates.

So if all you want is 60p slow-mo, you can get that from any camera that shoots 720/24 and 720/60. But if you want a wide variety of slow-mo rates, you want the 200/200A, 170, or EX1/EX3.

With the HVX200/HPX170/HMC150 you can shoot 720P @ 60fps and bring this into a 24fps timeline, for a 2.5x slow-motion effect.

Also, the HVX200/HPX170 allow you to vary the frame rate in many small steps between 24 - 60fps, providing a variable slow-motion range between 1.0 - 2.5x times normal speed.
