Hey guys – Just starting a new thread about some newbie FS7 questions here. Thanks for everyone’s input per FS7 lens choices in the separate thread here:
I have the camera in-hand and it’s stellar. I posted my initial thoughts over in that thread, particularly for the next person who may be doing a similar jump from Canon to Sony – but is considering hanging on to their Canon glass.
QUESTIONS:
• If anyone could chime in as to what to check what to look for not working correctly (any known FS7 weak spots?), as this was apparently a well rental used unit, please speak up now while I still have a time to return it if something is very wrong.
• Aside from eBay and Sony’s two parts distributors, any suggestions as to where to find inexpensive missing/replacement parts?
• Suggestions for replacement Sony batteries? Wasabi seemed to work pretty well for me in the past. But batteries for these certainly aren’t the dirt cheap NP-F style, which is a shame. The U60 Li-Ion battery that was included is dated 2007 (I’m assuming that they’re dated, right?), and I guess that I’m probably better off just buying a new battery.
• Stuff like slo-mo/center scan is amazing. However, are there ways to quickly jump back and forth as I’d primarily film stuff in 4K for options in post -- and not have to change down to HD in the menus just to do slo-mo stuff – and change back? Also, switching between HD and 4K seems very slow.
• Is my math correct that shooting with a Canon 300mm on an FS7 + plus 1.5x crop + Center Scan = effectively 900mm?
• Still struggling per finding an inexpensive self-filming Sony lens and am still open to suggestions. I’m currently testing a Sony 16-50 ($60 used) – which has slow auto-focus but might be useful on the cheap. Wondering if the SELP 18-105 f/4 ($600 new) might have significantly faster auto focusing and might be worth trying.
• Finally, if anyone else wants to chime in on ideal lenses, particularly for food footage, I’m all ears. Now that I got my hands on a Metabones Speed Booster, I think my two go-to lenses will wind up being the 24-105L (f/2.8) and the 100L Macro (f/2) – both of which have IS – which makes me comfortable enough to let go of the 24-70L.
A huge thanks to everyone per their thoughts and input!
