Other AF lenses that work on the GH1/GH2?

Here's a link to Panasonic's web page listing four-thirds lens compatibilities in thorough detail:

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/g1.html

Notice in the third column from the right, "Auto Continuous Operation", none of the four-thirds lenses from either Olympus or Panasonic support AFC during video recording. The listed lens that do support AFC are all micro four-thirds lenses from both Panasonic and Olympus.
Interestingly (or strangely, rather) the MFT lenses I tried support continuous AFC only. For example, regardless of whichever position the focus mode dial is in kit lens will always continuously focus. The pancake, when switched to AFC mode orders to switch to AFS mode. However, it will continuously focus in that mode. The "true AFS" mode, as it functions on Oly 14-54 v2,would be very desirable for certain shooting situations, especially if it is possible to refocus by half-pressing the shutter button (I would use external shutter release for that).

I should clarify my earlier post. If the lens is capable of auto focus that's what it will do when recording video regardless of whether the dial is set to AFS or AFC. From page 52 of the manual: "When recording motion pictures, the focus is continuously adjusted for both [AFS] and [AFC]." Of course, they're referring to the kit lens.

However, if the lens is listed on the Panny compatibility page and only capable of single auto focus, it may be able to auto focus with a half-press of the shutter button while recording. For example, my Leica 25mm 1.4 will single auto focus while recording. But some lenses apparently only have that capability in SD and not FHD mode according to the chart (if I'm interpreting the *7 right). However, I can tell you that the Leica will auto focus in both SD and FHD - even though it's shown with the *7 footnote. So either I'm reading this wrong or the chart is wrong.

This is an GH1 issue, not a lens issue. The GH1 doesn't have AFS in video-mode, the only way to do a single push focus is by turning the focus knob to either AFS or AFC and half push the shutter button which is really awkward. Only the fact that GH2 does have AFS (push focus) is reason for me to upgrade. It's now really cool to see that AF works with many lenses including Leicas. I assue that if AF works with stills it should work with video as well, why wouldn't it?

So, from the samples that everyone has, can we make a list of the lenses that do Continuous AF during video (also called focus pull) ?
as far as I know. Panny 20mm, 14-140mm and Olympus 14-54mm II can do focus pulling.

Is that correct ? Also, if someone has used all these lenses, would you be aware of the AFC speeds ? From memory the 20mm pancake is very slow to AF during video. Which of these lenses are usable for slow dolly move as a focus tracker/puller ?

There is no AFS when recording video - the camera automatically switches to AFC even if you have it set to AFS.

Which camera? My hacked GF1 can do single click auto focusing(AFS) or there is a menu setting that will let it do continuous autofocus during video(AFC). There is an additional setting that controls whether it does AFS and AFC for stills.

Was referring to the GH1 when recording video. I didn't do a good job of explaining this - what I should have said was if you have the dial set to AFS and then begin video recording, the GH1 automatically goes into AFC mode. If you're using a lens that's capable of AFC the focus is continuously adjusted even though the dial is set at AFS.

From page 52 of GH1 manual: "When recording motion pictures, the focus is continuously adjusted for both [AFS] and [AFC]."

AFC and AFS are only different when it comes to stills. With video, they both operate as AFC.

Autofocus GH2 taken out of firmware 1.0.0

Autofocus GH2 taken out of firmware 1.0.0

GH2 UK Release version: Looks like there's no longer AF in AFC mode working whilst recording in video record mode - You can press the shutter button half way to achieve focus on any given reference - it goes green pretty quick but still no substitute for auto :thumbdownfollow focusing!

Interesting. Looks like Panasonic really did rush out the GH2 to get some sales before Christmas. Disappointing, if not completely unexpected. I would assume a firmware update will be forthcoming early next year.
