OTG not working

Alright, I did a search on this but could find no joy.

I recently bought 80 GB USB OTG drive.

It seemed to be working fine with my HVX. I just can't my computer to recognize the damn thing. plugged it in, went through the new hardware wizard. It doesn't show up. I don't see any switch to switch it from Host to Device. Didn't see any special steps in the little manual that came with it. I though you'd just be able to plug it in.

System specs:
Windows XP, AMD 5200, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia Gforce 7600, 600 GB striped HD

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmmmmmmm................... when you turn it ON, do you get a "found new HW" pop-up in the system tray? If not, then perhaps your cable is bad. Are you using the same cable for the computer as with the HVX. I suspect not..................... :undecided

FWIW, I have a 30 GB version of the exact same OTG drive and its worked fine the few times I've used it. Handy device for sure!

Don't you wish some smart company would make a OTG USB thumb drive!

OTG drives have to work in host mode and device mode, and it may involve a different cable. For working with the computer it must be in device mode, so you cannot use the same cable as you'd use with the HVX.

Okay, I've tried using multiple cables: the USB cable I use with my HVX, th cable that came with the drive and a random USB cable. None of the three enabled my computer to communicate with the drive. I've also tried restarting the computer with with the various cables plugged in and the drive powered on.

Any ideas?

Is there a switch on the drive or something? I've never seen a USB OTG drive that didn't work as a simple device when plugged in with the proper cable, but maybe yours needs to be specifically told to go into device mode somehow?

When the OTG is connected to your HVX, can you review what you recorded to it? If not either the drive is bad, or your USB port is not working. Can you plug other devices in the same port and see them?

If it was just a formating issue the drive would still show up in Windows Explorer. Another thing to try is connect the drive to a different PC or Mac and see if it shows up. The problem here is narrowing down where the problem lies.

I just tried plugging it into my laptop. It goes through the new hardware wizard and then says a problem occurred while installing the device. After that, the drive shows up in the directory, but does not work when you try to access it: "Insert disk into drive F"

I'm kinda thinking about sending it back and just getting another model or something.

Try using the Microsoft Management Console to format the disk.

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage", then go to "Disk Management" under the "Storage" tree. The OTG drive should show up in the LOWER pane as a physical disk. Click on it to select it, and create a partition and format it as FAT32. Don't use the QuickFormat option, you want the format operation to scan the entire drive for bad sectors and map them out if necessary.
