Oscars discussion

So, what did you think? Shock, surprise, just as expected - what's your take?

Going first, I was somewhat shocked by Spotlight - an engaging film to be sure, brilliantly acted by almost all, but directed very by the numbers - deserving of the ultimate honor ahead of The Revenant... I think not! Also: I liked "Amy", but as a documentary, I felt it was a bit thin - I felt "Cartel Land" deserved it BY FAR... a totally ballsy and super insightful and well executed.

I loved the cinematography on The Revenant but the movie itself wasn't as great imo. I think this year generally was a rather mediocre one considering quality and quantity of quality movies/performances. Leo winning because, who else? No outstanding movie or performance this time imo, though I haven't seen all I must add.
There have been years where 2 or 3 movies and/or performances deserved an Oscar, this year I struggled even picking one and didn't really care in the end.

I have not seen any of the documentaries though.

edit: like many I found Tom Hardy's performance more noteworthy than Leo's but he didn't have to crawl in dirt and swim in cold water that much...

When you realize that the people who vote don't even have to have SEEN the movies or performances they're voting for, it makes it easier to understand how some of the nominations and wins can happen.

I think Ridley Scott should have won his first Oscar. I mean if they're handing out lifetime achievement awards like they did for Leo, Ridely should have got one as well. Rather than Alejandro González Iñárritu for the second year in a row.

Not surprised by Spotlight winning as it's an issues film. One of the complaints I've heard about The Revenant was that it was technically brilliant, but there seemed no clear point to it. Chris Rock's opening monologue rubbed me the wrong way. I get that the elephant in the room needed to be addressed, but not hammered over and over and over again. The show itself seemed terribly directed, with odd camera choices and a music selection that sounded like someone had their iPod on shuffle with no clear connection to the presenters.

+1000
And that Suge Knight repeated over and over again??? WTF??
With camera movement/choices - there were few ones that were completely messed up: guy sitting on a scene, wobbly shoulder mount. I liked this "after receiving Oscar" alley shot though.

Yes, the direction was way off par. Two bad cuts to cameras that were aimed at nothing. Those idiotic camera moves to show the nominee on display behind the speakers. That was cheesy. Then that hand-made window frame for Lady Gaga, with more nonsensical camera bobbing and weaving in front of the frame followed by the grip in the shot as the camera went through the frame. What was that supposed to be? I suppose it had something to do with the movie, which I have not seen.

I liked the set.

Seems to be more about politics than acting, directing, cinematography etc and it gets worse every year. The only bright spot was mad max fury road.
