J P... just out or curiosity - why are you so eager to upgrade? In general, you're better off not mucking with needed software/hardware unless absolutley necessary. If you really need to use Avid Xpress on the machine you're planning on upgrading, wait at least a few months for problems to shake out...
Ullanta...Leopard has many performace and interface enhancements that I want to take advantage of. I already purchased the OS -- Avid compatibility is the only thing keeping me from upgrading right now.
Avid thoroughly tests any new OS before it's approved. Meaning you could be in for a long wait. It amazes me that people are willing to potentially fracture a working application because they have to have the latest and greastest OS. I suppose it's all depends on your point of view. I've always considered my NLE a revenue generator. And if that revenue generator is down for even a half day because I installed a non-qualified OS I'm losing money. If editing is more of a hobby than a business you can probably stick your neck out and beta test Leopard and Avid. When the Avid doesn't work right at least you won't be losing money. And you'll have those cool interface enhancements. woo hoo?
I am running Xpress 5.6 and would like to purchase the upgrade to 5.7 for better P2 support. Should I go for it now, or should I wait for the next update which will be Leopard compatible? What I am wondering is if the next update will be free or another $50?
In other words, will the next version of Xpress be 5.7.8 or will it be 5.8.0?
Unfortunately, Avid doesn't even open under 10.5 for my MBP C2D. Some people have gotten it to run perfectly by deleting certain files and updating interlok extensions, but it seems so far to be only working on PPC based Macs.
It's not about "not being able to update in a timely manner". It's about having to deal with Apple changing their OS up until the day it's released. Avid has no way to update their software before the OS is public. And even then, any time Apple updates Quicktime, or their OS, it tends to break everything else.
