The dilemna is how best to organize footage so its accessible within Final Cut Pro. I am working on a natural history doc and on the first shoot collected tons of wildlife footage. The challenge is that due to the randomness of wildlife events I commonly had a P2 card with footage of a tarantula, meadowlark, badger, and many different scenics. Because I din't have much time in the field or know enough about using meta data have only notes that list the species I got footage of on each card- not that useful when looking for a close up of badger and have badger footage on 6 different cards.
So... I did not catalogue these well in the field and so when get these into FCP they basically have the random number assigned as clip name. I am realizing with this method... even though the footage is already digitized, I need to go through everything and note the best clips and describe the clips. I think this is good to evaluate and remind me of all the footage, but want to make this as efficient and fruitfal as possible.
I plan to use the master comment tab in FCP's browser to describe the clips and just drag the column next to my other important tabs like timecode start time, duration, etc. From there I will drag clips to specific bins so I can quickly search or find a specific badger shot..
Is there a better way? Shooting wildlife footage seems to take a different structure of organization because it is so random compared to other shooting, or am I not thinking of it properly or not doing enough organizational work in the field?
I would appreciate any comments!!
thanks.
