Ordinary objects as props or set decoration.

You mean the real prop? If so... that's pretty cool.

That prop would give me comfort since I could view it as the death of horrible child acting... that girl's performance blended in like chili on a white shirt.

The classic Star Trek ordinary object prop story is from TOS, where prop master Irving Feinberg was told to go out and buy some futuristic salt shakers for a very early episode featuring a "salt vampire." Well, he went out and bought the most futuristic ones he could find... and they were deemed too futuristic. More recognizable salt shakers were used for "The Man Trap," but the futuristic ones didn't go to waste, as they soon became Dr. McCoy's medical scanners, and at least in some of the Trek novels, they're referred to as "Feinberg scanners." :)

Just a side note; it seems that OSHA does not exist in the future. In all the futuristic series/movies like BSG, Stargate, and Star Trek (especially TNG, Voyager, etc.)... not once do you see a "Think Safety" poster in the hangars or warehouses.

And along those lines, never have I seen the officers walk into a break room or other staff gathering place to see the ubiquitous "EOE," "Employee Rights," and "Minimum Wage" posters hanging on the wall.

Just sayin'...

That's not *entirely* true...on 'Next Generation' we made a huge CAUTION - VARIABLE GRAVITY AREA banner that played in one or two episodes, in the background of the cargo deck...that was kind of a concession to safety.
