Ordering from B&H

Hi, I´m about to order the Glidecam 4000 pro from B&H. I live in Norway and strangely enough shipping it from US is cheaper than buying it in Norway. Anyhow when I was about to pay for it they said that:

"If you are a first time "mail order or on-line" customer, or if you are using a new or different credit card for the first time at B&H, upon completing your on-line order, you must fax or e-mail a copy of both sides of your credit card to..."

I can´t figure out how and why this is necessary for me ordering anything online... I´ve never even heard of something like this before. Here in Norway we use a cvc2-code to verify dredit cards online. Is this a normal (or safe) way of ordering stuff on the internet?

Terry,
I don't hae a clue why B&H does this? I figure it's jsut a extra step form them to make sure that you are legit when you order from overseas.

I've scanned in both sides of my Finnish CC, photoshopped "B&H Photo use only" across both sides and sent it along to them as they requested. Fax is safer than e-mail, thoguh I sent mine by e-mail. Thanks to the shear ammount of e-mail traffic these days, the security provided by the minute probability that something will happen is good enough for me.

I've ordered multiple times from B&H and never had any trouble, and that's with 2 seperate non-US credit cards.

Hi,

I live in New Zealand and I had to do this my first time ordering from B&H. Mikko is right, it's probably just another security check...I have heard from quite a lot of overseas customers from B&H...no complaints yet. :)

Thank you guys for answering. I just can't see what more information they can get form seeing a picture of the card, the numbers and names are the same... I'll have to look for some other stores before I decide...

Probably too many phishers have found out the ccv code of too many cards. Showing you have a physical card in your posession eliminates that problem.

Beats the hell out of that "Verified by Visa" nonsense, which has screwed up my orders more than half the time.

B&H is a mile from my house. Totally totally legit. No worries. They are asking as most fraud is one billing address, another shipping address. It's just an extra step to prevent fraud.

They are well rested after Yom Kippur so enjoy your Glidecam!

B&H wants to see the card because of the amount of overseas credit card fraud where folks overseas buy stolen card numbers but don't have the actual card in their possession. It doesn't eliminate fraud but it does reduce it. I have never had a problem with B&H to date.

B & H rules. Though I've heard that are a bit rough around the edges in person. I use them whenever I can. Once I ordered over $3,000 worth of goods and they called me just to verify that it was legit and that I was the one using my card. Anyway, I would for sure trust B & H and rest assured that they are just trying to keep everything on the up and up.

The store is pretty good---Its pretty much a block in itself.... Thats pretty impressive in NYC with rents being what they are.

I wouldnt consider them rough around the edges... its NYC, things are pricey, so maybe Im just accustom to it.... Id rather the store not be spectacular, and save 5% on all my items.

B&H is legit in all aspects, bought probably upwards of 100K over 5 years (for my company) through them..
The only complaint I have is customer service at the store is not great, but then again its PACKED with people in there...Most of the time tourists just looking-

Oddly enough, and this is in NO way a racist comment....but it doesnt hurt to have a Jewish last name. My ex g/f put my dvx on her credit card and they actually gave her 10% off! Maybe it was just a random occurance, maybe they were trying to flirt with....either way...I was jumping for Joy for it!

I think that was a female thing not a religion thing... :)

I've ordered practically everythnig from B&H. However, if you have questions regarding specific equipment - I recommend calling another vendor the B&H folks (at least for me) seemed more interested in getting me off of the phone so that they could make a sale instead of answering my questions. But other than that 3 thumbs up (I'm ambidexterious)
