Hi all, we are joining another owners thread!

Happy to say we pulled the trigger on the HPX250! Should be getting it today, kitted out with a marshall monitor and Libec sticks.

We are interested in seeing how well this will match up to (and with) the EX1r.. The 250 wasn't out when we purchased the sony last year, and I just haven't been to impressed with the EX1r setup.

That purchase was the EX1r, bogen 504 tripod system and manhattan monitor.. I have to say the tripod head was a big disappointment, the EX1r's audio and picture is beyond noisy even at -3db, and we had a DOA manhattan monitor (which they switched out immediately and new one is solid).

We will be comparing this to the new purchase shortly which will be the HPX250, Marshall 7" SDI monitor and Libec RH25 tripod system. Honestly I think we will love it, and if thats the case we will sell the EX1r and get another HPX250.

Ill update with findings shortly!!

I don't have either of those cameras but I've never heard of anyone saying the EX1r image sucks. I'd be curious to see a side-by-side comparison myself as I'm on the verge of a AC160/HPX250 purchase myself.

I've had the HPX250 for a few months now and I love the camera. It's probably the cleanest image out there. I've run +3 and +6db gain on it and you can't see it. If the noise reduction is set to PAP2, it's not as light sensitive as the EX, but at PAP1 I believe it's very close.

Haven't used any of these cameras but as far as I understand it, the HPX250 should be more noisy than the EX1r. It has the same chip set as the HPX370, and the 370 is noisier than the EX1... Don't know what they changed on the softer side on the 250 though...

So definitely happy with the 250 after some preliminary tests. We just used it as a B camera next to the EX1r and getting use to it quickly. Nice thing is it feels like a bigger HMC150 and has a very similar layout. Menues are a bit different and I guess I need to open the manual to see what all this PAP1 and PAP2 stuff means :D.

Just to clear up, not saying the EX1r image sucks. It's more noisy than I would thought. Dont get me wrong the EX1r has a beautiful image. We shoot black shirts on a white cyc, the noise looks like little ants running around on the shirt. We have to heavily compress the blacks in post to make it not so noticeable.

I am eager to do the same shot with the 250 and see which is better.

Hands down the Libec is much better than the manfrotto tripod.

Still waiting for the Marshall monitor.

I got burned on the Manfrotto 503. Won't be buying manfrotto in the future. The 504 looked interesting when it came out, but I just didn't trust them anymore. I bought the Vinten Vision Blue. It cost alot more, but it's alot more tripod. Works with the HPX250 beautifully.

I feel yeah, havent used anything higher than the 504 but not fond of the 501, 503 or 504 so far lol.. This libec feels really smooth with no start and stop jitters you always get with a bogen.

Also 2 handles makes a world of a difference to me, always recommended. We are using this 250 as a studio cam and also got the Libec DL-3 Dolly... also impressed in how sturdy the design is of this dolly.

Congrats on the new camera, my company owns both the EX3 and the HPX250. If you are to shoot multi-cam, in conjunction with the Ex and HPX I would recommend you paint the HPX250 to match the EX and not the reverse. My limited understanding of the Sony chip set, manufacturing/ design and compression format is that it removes part of your blue channel. Leaving you with a warmer look on the EX; the HPX splits out the RGB info equally and gives you a cooler look. It will be easier to paint with the HPX to match the Sony than the reverse since the color info in the blue channel does not exist on the Sony.

I'm sure one of the video engineers on this site might dispute my findings or could elaborate on the manufacturing technique's in more detail? This is all based on my experience but we have always had more luck color matching the Panasonic to the Sony than the reverse.

Take care,

Ahhh thanks for sharing..

I noticed more green in the HPX250 picture after some initial testing.. but I think you are on to something with less reds wich would cause the same symtoms. I will definitely be tweaking the 250 to match the EX since we are already setup for a EX picture and I am much more familiar with panny scene files.

Noise in blacks so far seem similar, but I am thinking the 250 is a little less noisy right out of the box.

The 501, 502, 3, etc. are NOT full fluid heads. I don't know why people keep buying those heads. Good for lock-down shots. But they are friction plates with some grease dabed on.

How is the tripod, I am looking at getting the same one, but cant find any real reviews. The rep told me good things about the 504HD, 546BK Mann. After seeing stories about the legs giving out I am looking (actully waiting for my rebate ) carefully. Let me know.

So far so good!

This Libec RH25 tripod kit is worth the money and it was in the same price range as the 504HD kit, which we already have. The 504 feels the same as the cheap 501 and its controls are just as un-responsive, but hey you get a lighted bubble leveler! Now this Libec is a solid step up from any bogen tripod I've used (most bogens under $800). The Libec head has smooth drag and its very east to maintain a smooth pan and/or tilt with no jerky starts and stops.. Sticks are very sturdy and pretty much the same as good bogen sticks but I have never had a problem with bogen sticks like the 546B or 546GB . Its not the tallest tripod so we use the Libec DL-3 dolly to get us a few more inches and it makes it easy to move the HPX250 kit around the studio/office.

Bottom line - Im going Libec from now on. Anyone wanna buy a 504 kit?? :D

You may be stuck with it. I did see some reviews where some people liked it. Glad I went with the Vinten Vision Blue.

Thanks. Now that I have my camera, I am so out of date because all my input was tape. So now a world of how to correctly get me footage in. Just figured it out, but boy with 1080 the file size is a monster when I have my final product. I just hope I am compressing it right and not losing any quality. Time will tell.
