Hey guys, I need an organic sounding punch sound effect that really sounds like its hitting the mark...crack skulls :) all the sound effects ive heard online are 2 electronic and fake or gimicky. So i wanted to record one myself. what is a good thing around the house to get that kinda sound? I was goin around hiting stuff and listening....havent found it yet.

Try hitting some cabbage with a baseball bat. Layer that maybe with a crunch from celery wrapped in a dam chamois.

For extra weight and meatiness, try... er... meat. A great, big, bone-in ham will give you a very dense and weighty punch sound, ideal for a shot to the gut. Just take care that you don't slice your knuckles on the end of the bone. If ham's not on sale, try using the biggest pot-roast you can find. Bigger, denser cuts of meat will generally yield better results. Just be sure to clean up your foley space afterwards; splatters of meat-squeezins and stray chunks will rot and attract vermin. Better to leave the foley pits smelling of bleach than to leave them smelling like an abattoir.

A neoprene flutter-board can be handy for added "crack" to the punch. If you want some extra-traumatic bone crunching (on top of C2V's excellent suggestions), try wrapping some dry rigatoni in a damp chamois and crushing it.

A classic is also to use a phone book rolled up and wrapped in duct tape. You can hit it with bats etc and it won't leave flying guts all over your Foley room.

I've done it by just taking off my shirt and punching my stomach. You can take that (when you get a good one) and mix it with another instance of the same hit, only lower the pitch. Ir just hit your fist into your hand, and experiment with changing the pitch. Bring up 3 or 4 instances of the same punch, line them up, lower pitch on some. All together make a meaty punch.

Did the recordings just now. Worked out great. Have a nice crunch one and a nice meaty thud one. Used celery in chamois, cabbage and punched the ball area of my palm. Layered those and adjusted them...and sounded real good.
Thanks fellas.
