Can Someone explain to me how these options affect the image that the camera captures? Or explain what they are theoretically supposed to affect?

Detail Level
V Detail Level
Detail Coring
Master PED
A.Iris Level

Knee

Please don't respond with "get barry's book" ... If I had the money at the I would have bought it long ago...I will get it eventually...

I would just like to know how those options affect the image so I can do some tests and have bit of knowledge of how things may turn out..

I want to play around with the settings, but would like to know what does what so I can go about getting certain looks for things.

any takers?

Re: Options

A. Iris Level is for the automatic mode of the iris. You can say to the auto iris to be more open!

If you increase the detail coring, you'll have slighty less noise.

Sorry to bring this thread up again -- it seemed closest to giving an answer.

I need a technical description of V Detail Level and Detail Coring (DVX100A PAL) so I can determine optimal settings for a number of situations.

No I don't have Barry's book, and I won't get it because we can't use credit-cards over the Internet here (otherwise I'd have it already!)

I think you can call in an order. :)

I don't mess around with those settings much, but I think the v detail is the one with the thick and thin settings....no? I only play with that when I am getting moire patterns from venetian blinds and stuff like that. Switching it to thick helps out with that. You supposedly lose some res (I think), but on my TV, I never noticed a difference. That's about all I can help with at the moment.

WHere exactly is "here"?

V_Detail_Level sharpens the contrast vertically between horizontal lines. It doesn't necessarily add more detail, per se, but it brightens light lines and darkens dark lines such that the distinction between them is clearer. It's a fairly subtle effect.

Detail Coring basically smooths out noise and very fine detail. The higher you crank up detail coring, the less visible noise will be in your image. Coring is tied to overall detail level -- the lower your Detail Level, the less effect Detail Coring will have. High levels of Detail Level will actually sharpen the edges of the noise in the image, making noise more visible -- Detail Coring can counteract that.

Like V_Detail_Level, Detail Coring is also a fairly subtle effect.

If you can order from Amazon, they carry it... or Abel Cine Tech or Birns & Sawyer... or we can always do an international money order, or western union, etc.

Thanks Barry,

Does lowering Detail Coring cause a slight blur?

Would increasing V_Detail_Level antagonize flickering horizontal lines on TVs?

Our video ends up on CDROM, so we shoot 25P on THIN and DETAIL LEVEL at -3. What do you think these two additional settings should be to compliment this? Is there a setting or combination that should be avoided (perhaps because they cancel each other out?)

Yesterday I did quite a bit of experimentation, and didn't notice much of a difference.

I'm in Central Asia, and most vendors don't accept credit cards from here. To make things worse, most mail gets lost. If I need anything, I give a travelling friend cash and get him to carry it back.

Thanks again!

No, *increasing* detail coring causes a slight blur.

Increasing V-detail-level would definitely antagonize flickering horizontal lines on TVs.

For CDROM, you're presuming playback on a computer monitor, right? So flicker is a non-issue? In that case, you can set them to whatever you think looks good, with no concern over flicker etc. People seem to like a contrastier look, so I'd probably crank both of those settings up some.

Flicker is a bit of an issue, because many run it out of their laptop to a TV or (cheap) projector.

I'll keep experimenting.
