Optimal project settings with DVX100A PAL, help!

Hi,

I'm in a film school in Spain and we own 3 DVX100A (PAL) and 6 licenses of Xpress Pro. My question is about when we open AVID and select the type of project I really want to know what is the difference when we choose 25i or 25p. I have this doubt because the facts are:
We shoot usually in F5 or F6 in 25p,
We all know that the camera is progressive only in the electronics and the final tape is of course 25 frames interlaced (Pal standard).

So... the logical setting would be 25i because thats how the tape is, but if we choose 25p we can also work...
When I check help, when avid says things about 25p they talk about real progressive from higher sources (no DV).
Other question is wich is the real resolution of the DV tape?
I can see in the capture tool DV25 420 and DV25 411 but using our SONY DSR 11 we can only select DV25 420... I hope this is the real thing...

These are just existencial questions because we usually work in 25i as project settings, and everything is fine including digital cut. The point is that i'm not totally satisfied with the quality of the final dvd's we make. So if someone tells us wich are the real settings and why, I will sleep better :)

Thank you very much

Although the tape format is 25i, the motion resolution of the original capure is 25p. This means that motion only updates every 1/25th of second instead of 1/50th if you had shot progressive. The progressive mode also gives you the full vertical resoluition on every frame. The 25p is also closer to the look and feel of film becuase of the frame rate and progressive nature.

When selecting a project in Avid, the p project will continue to preserve the progressive nature of the footage by ensuring that all efects, moves, wipes, etc. are rendered as progressive frames, and not interlace.

Working in a 25i will not change the look of the footage, but wipes, title moves, etc. will now be done on 1/50th instead of 1/25th. If you were to export a frame from each, you would see interlace artifacts from the 25i effects, whereas the 25p would still be filly progressive. This is a consideration when output needs to remain progressive such as:
progressive DVD
LCD monitors
PLasma monitors
Film
Video projection etc.

Michael,
thank you very much, now it's clear.
Then if we keep working in 25p, the natural step would be (using sorenson) make a progressive mpeg2? am I right? Can we find any problem waching a dvd from a complete progressive proccess when we wacht i in an standard TV?

If it's not to much what do you think about resolutions? Is the DV25 411 only for bigger formats than DV?

Thank you very much.

The progressive DVD can easily be made from a 25p project. 411 is for a different format of DV25 that is available in PAL. I need to check up on it to be sure... perhaps DVCAM versus miniDV?
