Optical Image Stabilizer question

There are three modes of stabilization, I've never seen anyone post using mode 2 or mode 3-I've read the manual and it seems turning the lens stabilizer off eliminates the OIS but should I change it in the menu as well?

Image is continually corrected, so you can see the image clearly on the Live View finder or the LCD.

Correction occurs only when you press the shutter release button, providing a greater corrective effect.

Continually corrects for up/down camera movement; ideal for panning action shots.

...according to Panasonic. It looks like the modes don't affect whether OIS is on or off - just how it operates when it is on. Looks like mode 3 could be pretty useful. Mode 2 looks useless for video.

But there's a footnote' in two places in the Panasonic manual that states that stabilization is always set to Mode 1 when shooting video.

That's a pity as I use the equivalent to Mode 3 ie 'panning mode' on my Canon 5D's 70-200mm lens when on a tripod and it stops 'jitter' at the longest focal lengths.

What, then is the difference of turning the OIS (on the kit lens) off or on? I've read conflicting info about what it purports to do when shooting video, can someone please explain better than the manual?

Too bad they only support mode 1 for video. Mode 3 looks like it could be a nice addition. I wonder if this could be made part of the hack.
