how effective is this function? i havent had a chance to really test it. does anyone have notes / thoughts about this? how does it compare to a Sony PD for example? is ther any studdering or quality issues when shooting 24P with OIS enabled?
just turn off the IS when your on a tripod.. but yes, Optical stabilization works, and it works real well. It will allow you to shoot 2 stops lower handheld.
If you have OIS on when using a tripod you'll sometimes get a very noticeable jutter to your pans.. and things will not look smooth no matter how smooth your pan was. The OIS makes things lag due to the way it is designed, I am sure someone else can you give you a better descrip as I am no expert but having seen this from my experiences.
If it stutters when panning on a tripod, why doesn't it stutter when panning by hand? It seems to me it does (unless I just screwed up the capture).
In that case, what is it good for, other than hand-held static shots? (Which, considering the amount of caffeine and nicotine I consume, is not a bad thing at all...)
Dan, turn off OIS handheld and you'll see exactly why it is good..
It lags on a tripod because it is attempting to compensate for shake that probably is not present when on a tripod. You won't see it when your using a handheld because handheld shots are always going to shaky to a degree, the OIS is correcting the minor shakes in your hands, and your pan movement is never uniform handheld so it isn't quite as noticeable. I am sure the same "stutter" or lag is present in handheld shots, but since the entire shot is not smooth to begin with it won't be perceptable.
A friend of mine just shot a music video with OIS off.. entirely handheld.. it hurts to watch it is so shaky... those minor shakes really become noticeable
