Oprah Small Town Spot

Believe it or not, Oprah is looking for small towns to shoot her show in. The following is a thing a friend and I threw together really quickly to send in to the show in hopes she'll come to our town.

This was my first actual project with the DVX. The only main hitch I ran into was that I did a bunch of interviews with various shop owners, and I was so focused on keeping my handheld shots steady that I paid no attention to audio levels. All the interviews were unusable because the audio was almost non-existent! Live and Learn.

Anyway, please offer me feedback. I adore harsh criticism.

i especially like the boatshots and the fall-forest. nice clip.

IMO a few times the voiceover gets too quick and seems to swallow a few syllables. maybe it is me being non-american, but i would slow those parts a bit. it only happens 2-3 times, the rest of the VO is good.

Re: Oprah Small Town Spot

You're totally right about the voiceovers. That's my friend doing that, and we did these at the last minute (actually, the whole project was like that), and it was way late at night. Both his voice and his dramatic instincts were really sluggish.

I messed with the levels a bunch to try to even out his volume changes, but I don't know if I'm good enough to slow any of it down without having it sound unnatural. I'm not really a sound editor, though I keep trying. :)

Re: Oprah Small Town Spot

I actually liked the voice over. It sounded very "American" and friendly...not as tinny and cynical as most DV voiceovers. I did notice that it lagged and picked up in a few spots...but Queen Oprah would probably like that...

nice shots...it felt like a tv spot (in a good way).

good stuff.

Re: Oprah Small Town Spot

I agree, it felt really personal and the "problems" with the voiceover actually benefitted the piece. It didn't feel generic.

Nice job.

Hope you win :)

On a sidebar, Rob Rodriguez *was* cool, until he started Spy Kids, and the unwatchable Once Upon a Time in Mexico...he used to be my idol, now look, sigh...*shrug*

Re: Oprah Small Town Spot

I never saw any of the Spy Kids flicks. But I own Once Upon a Time in Mexico. I'm never understand why people don't like it. I thought it was hilarious! Plus, any movie with good director's commentary goes way up in my books.
