FS7: Oportunity offered by CONVERGENT DESIGN for Gemini recorders. Small trick to make use

Hello guys.

At this moment until 15 May Convergent Design offers this possibility : Gemini recorders owner can send the recorder to Convergent Design for a trade program if you buy an Odyssey 7Q+. They will offer you for the recorder 2 pcs SSD of 512 Gb.

The way : i will buy an Odyssey 7Q+ ( also on sale with 2 SSD but 256Gb each ), put my Gemini SSDs for sale on ebay, will send them the recorder and they will send me back 2 pcs of 512Gb for the recorder.
I just bought the recorder from ebay 2 weeks ago for about 900 euros.

THE TRICK : will sell my Gemini SSD on ebay for 100-200 dollars a piece , send them the Gemini. So i will get back SSD worth of 1400 euros. But i've paid 900 euros and will get 1400 euros plus some money from the SSD's that came with the Gemini. That's 1000 euro easy money.

Paid Gemini from ebay - 900 euros
Sell Gemini SSD +500 euros
Send the Gemini +1400 euros worth of SSD
New ODYSSEY 7Q+ -2350 euro ( with 2 x 256Gb )

Actually you spend 2750 euros to have the best recorder on the market with 4 SSD.s Thats a deal guys. Also if you had a paid license on the Gemini they will transfer it to Odyssey for free.

I'm after trading-in my nanoFlash towards some 4K equipment purchase, so still not following you - sorry :)

Was wondering the same thing, though I still use my two Nano's from time to time. They are still very simple and offer both two very useful codecs. I've found them almost as useful to digitize from other formats into .MXF or .MOV.
My thoughts thus far is, as much as I love Convergents products and service, I'm looking very closely at the Atmos Shogun. It not only does ProRes (which I am hoping to be able to do with my FS7 soon) but it does DNxHD, which is sweet. From what I need...and what I can tell, the Shogun maybe a better option.

Odyssey 7Q+ will have ProRes 4444. Saw on a forum where a CD guy came in discussion and said it. If i will find it i will link it here.

I was also thinking that the fact they ask for the Gemini back is a tricky thing. I am still in the conspiration theory zone where probably the Gemini recorder is able to do something for free that they dont want us to know, maybe a hack for the Sony Raw, Arriraw whatever. As much as i like the ideea of customer service i am still thinking the Gemini is supranatural but we dont know. :-)

I am in the process of writing a review on the Shogun as I've mentioned on a few other threads. All I will say is that I would be patient and await CD's implementation of other ProRes datarates and DNxHD. Odyssey is a superior unit.

The Odyssey7Q+ and Odyssey7Q will be able to record compressed 444 in a future free firmware update.

The Odyssey7Q+, Odyssey7Q, and Odyssey7 will be able to record in DNx in a future free firmware update.

The Gemini 4:4:4 was a great device for its time. But the Odyssey monitor/recorders are basically twice as powerful in every regard. The monitor functions on the Gemini pale compared to the Odyssey. There really is no comparison. The reason we offer the trade-up refresh deal on the Gemini is to move people into the Odyssey. We want them on the Odyssey so that they have the better machine and can move forward with us rather than feeling left behind. And no, there is no hidden super power buried within the Gemini that we're trying to keep from the world.

Thanks Mitch for clarifying. I am not used with companies that take care of it's customers. Sorry, bad habbit after living 35 years on this earth. Will send the Gemini in few days. Can you point a shipping adress ?

PS. If the recorder will record Prores HQ i suppose it means it could record also from Amira which i might rent from time to time and want to use my own recorder rather than rental memory.

The Odyssey7Q+ most certainly does record in Apple ProRes and can do so from the Amira quite well. As a high quality OLED monitor the Odyssey is an excellent accessory to the Amira.

Please send me a PM with your direct contact information and I will ask someone to reach out to you about your Gemini.
