Opinion Wanted: Camera bag for DVX100?

Hi All,

I'm in the market for a bag for my DVX100. I currently use two Pelican cases--one for my DVX100 and another for shockmount/pistol grip/zeppelin and cable. I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling for work (customer interviews, research, feedback) and want something that could hold the camera, batteries, charger, a wireless kit or two, and my laptop. If I could strap the tripod to the outside, all the better.

Last year when I did this, I carried the pelican, a tripod bag, and put the wireless kits in a plastic box in my suitcase. This was in addition to a laptop bag. Ideally I'd have my suitcase and this new wonder of a bag. Luckily I had a sherpa (read: assistant), but this time I might not be as lucky!

I borrowed a nice portabrace bag when my better half volunteered me to be wedding videographer for a relative in Alabama, and while I liked the bag it couldn't carry the tripod.

Any suggestions/experience you want to share with what you're using?

Cheers,

John

hi-
why not put the laptop and accessories in a backpack? or if you are really starting to get heavy, get a pelican with wheels. I have one, but I actually only use it for transport because the wheeling and all make me less mobile. i don't there is much getting around having to lug the tripod.

yea the kata is good. i have one. but its big. but it does have a place for a laptop.

I've been a still photo road warrior for some time- here's my opinion:

Rollers. All my bag now have rollers- you'll find that, over the years, your back will show the bad effects of too many heavy sling bags. On my most recent trip with the DVX, I used one of my rolling Tamrac bags to hold the DVX, Mic(s) chargers, cables, etc- all the crucial gear that's always on my person- never checked into the hold of the airplane. I carry a seperate laptop bag that's also my "purse" with production schedules, wallet, iPod snacks, DVD movies, books and any magazines for the plane, etc. My laptop bag has a sleeve in the back that slips over the handle of the roller bag, so everything rolls.

Tripods and lightstands travel in a hard plastic golf bag case that has, you guessed it, rollers. If it's a local location, I use Tamrac padded lightstand bags, AKA Burrito bags. The airlines rarely weigh the Golf case, so if you're overweight, (the equipment, not your personally) put excess in that case. My last trip they nailed me $ for a 53 lb Kino case because it looks heavy- the golf bag was a lot heavier, but they didn't even weight it.

Whichever bag youo choose, DO NOT get the kind with the foam cutouts- it's nasty stuff that will get into the workings of your gear. Every time you remove or replace something in that foam, a little bit scrapes off. Those little bits are like sand to moving parts.

I like Tamrac and Lightware cases. I'm sure Lowe is also a good case. But the big tip:

Rollers.
