Opinion from the 5D users

Hey there,

I've already been to the GH1 boards and that little camera is getting a lot of hype. I have seen absolutely gorgeous footage coming from the 5D and some pretty damn good looking stuff from the GH1 too. I asked over there if they think the GH1 will match the 5D for picture quality. I just wanted to know how promising all the 5D users think the GH1 will be. I know the GH1 hasn't be widely available yet so maybe we just aren't seeing as cool of stuff from it because of lack of availability?

I own an HVX200 and shoot a lot of spec commercials to build my reel and I think this would get me out there more than the large HVX. Also, I don't see myself working too much about quick pans (rolling shutter). I'm thinking a DSLR might be my next purchase.

Thanks,

The codec is weak. That means there are a lot of situations where it just won't cut it. May be minor, may not, but there is no doubt that it will be a slight reduction in quality. It's also quite a bit less expensive to balance that out.

The only issue that the GH1 has is the codec. That's what is so frustrating about it. I would have the GH1 over the MKII for so many reason. However its so disturbing to see Panasonic take a camera that has the "balls" to generate an amazingly powerful imagery; and the GH1 is so much better a refined V.1 camera then the MKII is at v.1. I still haven't written off getting the GH1. The list is long why it's better than the MkII. The video wasn't an afterthought on the GH1; it was on the MKII, and it's obvious. My fingers are crossed the Panny will do their best to find a firmware mod to maybe squeeze more out o f the codec chips for the 1080 mode. I wish and I hope..........

Edit.. Actually on second thought... I'm going opt-out of this one before my opinion gets me in trouble again.

Two very different tools for different needs and types of people.

Me too, man. Me too. I agree with your sentiment and the emotion... because it just plain out sucks that the 1080/24 (24 man... 24) had to take a hit like that. GH-1B or GH-2, I really hope they wise up or even give us a firmware update.

I couldn't bring myself to use the MKii on either job that I had lined up for it. If I had my GH-1's I'd be like "HELL YEAH!", cause both projects are going broadcast 1080 and the GH-1 would have been perfect for that. Get some 1080/24 AND some 720/60, excellent lowlight performance and my Zeiss contax. These are dream jobs to get with the GH-1.

But instead, I broke out the RED last night and remembered JUST how heavy it is, large, bulky... and lastly... how great it is to worry about what I'm shooting, not how I'm shooting. I had plenty of pan action going on at telephoto ends, lots of handheld, and definitely ultra lowlight (outside under street lamps and a small projector's light) and it just turned out fantastic.

So yeah, the V1 GH-1 is definitely a well designed image acquisition tool, if that damned 1080/24 Codec were better then it'd be near-to being able to use any other Camera designed for Video, worry about what you're shooting not how.

That's really what's important, and none of the VDSLRS have nailed it yet. GH-1 is the closest for me, but still needs to be fixed for sure.

Pappas, I know you got some friends with fierce weapons!!! Send them to Panny!

Well, for what it's worth (which ain't much), I looked closely at the GH-1 and the Mark II, and I have no doubts whatsoever the Mark II is a much better camera for my needs. I just can't seem to find it in stock at B&H when I'm at my computer ready to order.

Try Best Buy and Adorama.

Sheila at Pitman (used to be National Graphics) has them in stock. A friend of mine just bought from her 2 days ago on my recommendation. Here is her email:

Thanks guys... I tried Best Buy but since they want sales tax I would rather just get it in store, but no Best Buy within a couple hunnerd miles had them in stock. The camera has been ordered from B&H and paid for, I was just waiting for stock to come in and this morning they said it came. I should have it in a couple days, I'm stoked! I wonder if these new ones will have the new firmware already installed? I guess I'll find out soon.

Very Cool!
Let us know about the firmware coming installed.
I doubt it, because the manufacture date had to have been prior to June 2.

I'm guessing you bought the body only? Because I just checked and they aren't selling the body+Lens. Which is what I wanted to do, just buy both even thought I know I can buy them separately. I just wanted them to come already together, I did not want to have to receive one and wait for the other.

Yes, I got the body only. I already have a big selection of Canon L glass from my still photography. They only allowed me to order one extra battery, I guess those are limited due to demand. I tried Adorama yesterday to order another battery (I like batteries, ha!) but I think they were out of stock on them. Canon is busy right now in the dslr department! They needed this MKII because Nikon was stealing their thunder the last couple of years.

Yeah your lucky, well goodluck man I am jealous, tell me how everything works out and how fast it gets to you. Did you do priority shipping? Sorry for the questions I am just thinking about ordering from BH as well. They are the best video online store on the net period. But sometimes they can get expensive. I have also heard Adorama is starting to turn into bait n switch so I think I am just going to play it safe and buy from BH. They have never done me wrong.

I just got a call from UPS and they're delivering it tomorrow. Cool. I ordered it yesterday with 2-day shipping, was told the camera was out of stock (with an apology), so I emailed back and told them I didn't want the $1,000 worth of accessories 2-day shipped because that would be pointless to pay for the extra shipping without the camera. They emailed me back and said more MKII's arrived and they're shipping it today.

So they actually gave me overnight shipping instead of 2-business days (it was originally scheduled to arrive Friday). I ordered some accessories from Adorama too (their SanDisk 32 GB Extreme III card was $10-15 cheaper than B&H). I think Adorama is solid, but I've just always bought through B&H over the years and it's been a good relationship. They send my kids birthday presents and everything (keeeding).
