Opening scene from 'Five'

Hi world,

Here to share the opening scene from our independent movie 'FIVE'.

You can watch the clip HERE: http://one.revver.com/watch/226638/flv/affiliate/79964

The colour correction and sound design aren't complete since the movie is still in rough cut stage.

The movie was shot in 10 days - 8 days principal photography and 2 days pickups by a cast and crew of 10 people. It was shot on location and used natural lighting all the time (since there was no electricity at the location - which was an hour's hike into the woods).

For production photos you can check out: http://www.unkreative.com/gallery/five

Cheers,
Amit

hey, that was really cool.

the aerial shot was stock footage right? I like the running clips, but there seems to be soem strange bumping in the sound during those shots? Maybe the mic is being tapped o so gently?

Nice work.

The wavy lights seemed a little off to me, were they 60i ? The chase scenes were great, but the drowning scenes and floating was a little unbelievable to me.

Liked the use of flyover shot and titles were nice and simple!

thanks for checking the clip out

wavy lights are off on purpose. - the project is being shot at 25p [we are in PAL based land]

aerial footage is library footage of the area we shot in. sound is still incomplete - the bump you hear is the camera mic :-)

i will be postingmore behind the scenes clips soon

Hi Amit,

I gave you five stars. I'll comment first on the rough cut of your opening scene that you've provided and then ask questions.

I tend to review as "how I would do it" so please take it with a grain of salt, but hopefully something might come across as a good idea.

COMPANY LOGO INTRO
The movies opens with the company logo "unkreative artists logo" which zooms out very slighting and then at the last moment zooms in quickly with a massive scale increase. I think the logo would look better static. Fade the logo in while fading in the gritty music you have later in the trailer. After a few seconds of the music you could begin to fade the music out while brining in the audio of the girl running. Then fade out the logo instead of zooming it. I think the zoom of the logo looked amateur, at the very least I'd only fade in and out the logo. Or fade it in and have it earthquake a little or something. The logo is your first impression. Just an idea, I'm an editor too.

GIRL RUNNING
Aside from the audio that I'm sure you'll fix later, I thought this looked really tight.

TUNNEL SHOT
That shot was KILLER. Great work.

BACKSEAT OF CAR
GREAT lighting job in the car. Very natural. I like the reality look of it, that's something I strive for too.

LIGHTS
Someone commented that the lights didnt work. I think they're fine, but could use color correction to match the scene a bit more. BUT the big thing here is to make that shot work is you have to have the girl laying on her back ur looking out the back window up into the sky. If we see her looking out the window or on her back, we'll understand that the shot is her POV. You have a few shots of her laying on her back and one of her looking out the back window. Use one of them and then cut right to that shot of the lights.

CUT TO: GIRL RUNNING
The lighting when the girl starts climbing up the hill is a lot better than the running scene, maybe it was shot at different times of the day? I really liked the quality of the video in this portion of the chase scene.

DROWDING GIRL IN WATER
I wasn't sure why the sleeve of the killer's shirt was as white and clean as it was but maybe that is explained later. The girl was REALLY into it, great acting but the killer looked more like an ACTOR tyring to not to hurt his co-actor. He wasn't into it. This is where I ussually come in as director and say to the actor "That ***** just ran your mother over and drove off! Get fuKin rid of her!" Push the actor, call him a punk, what ever you have to do. BUT don't worry about it this is where editing comes into play. You HAVE TO mess with the editing big time in this scene. I would add some harder music. Like White Zombie style music. Speed up the video as he's jamming her head into the water. Just really cut the hell out of it. Good editors can make that killer look like he really wants her to die with every ounce of his being. When he's done with her he places his hand on her shoulder very gently. Again you need to cut that. He looks like he just made love to her and he has to leave her to go to work in the morning. He should kick her in the skull and drag her ass into the deep end. A bit drastic, but you know what I mean. Speed up the shot of him ripping the neclace off her neck by 300%. Our heart should be pounding just as hard as the guy whacking that chick. I'd cut the shot of the murderer standing up in the water as she floats away. We've only scene his hand and now we are getting half of his full body up to his head and he looks like he mine as well be fishing. Cut to the shot after, the close up of her floating on her back. I do like the music here, very earie.

GIRL SINKING
Nice shot and a great place to fade out. But your next shot is an arieal. If you have any takes of panning up to the sky from the water, I would use that, then fade to black quickly, then fade back in (as its a new day) and then cut to the ariel shot and have "Unkreative artists presents" OVERLAYED on that shot. If it's 4 weeks earlier, let us know that.

ARIAL SHOT
The loud thumping bass comes in at just the right spots. Arieal shots are GREAT to add production value to a low budget movie, very smart move.

CAMP
Good transition panning down from the sky from the arial shot too the camp, but too bad you couldn't pan up from the water to the sky before the arieal. It's like passing a ball. The camera guy on the ground is saying "Here, Catch!" Then the camera guy in the sky takes the shot for a while, and then he says "Catch!" to the guy on the ground at the camp and then that guy takes the shot to the people coming out of the camp. You know this though.

After my feedback I realize I don't have any questions other than how did you light the car when she was in the back seat. What time of day was it?

You have a lot of potential.

Hi
thanks for the detailed feedback..i have implemented the thing which you pointed out about the logo.

as to how we did the car lighting - we shot that at night but we strapped a fluroscent emergency light to the roof of the car (where the interior door light usually is) - to provide some uniformity in lighting. that way we are getting the changing shades of light as we drive around while seeing things clearly.

also a point i would like to make about 'GIRL SINKING' is that things don't have to be spelled out to the audience all the time. By hiding information you are creating energy within the movie - if the audience is not aware of when the event that has taken place is placed in context to what they are currently seeing.

But anyway - thanks for your comments are detailed feedback - really appreciate it.

Cheers,
Amit

[P.S- the running shots and the drowning/sinking shots were shot in the afternoon]

Glad I could help a little. Was a fun review. Good look Amit.

can you post more delails on the flourescent emergency light? How many watts, how big, etc. Or even a link to it would be great. Thanks, a great help.

Wow. Looks great, some really incredible visuals there. I actually like how you used the wavy lights to show the disorentation of the character. Can't wait to see more :)

hey man, you got some good stuff there and props for teh accomplishment. I felt compelled to post this quick photoshop job about cc because I think it'll help the production value and style.

I love the tunnel and light shots but felt that the in car shots broke the effect and rolled back the impact of the lights. If you intro'd some of the same colors into the car interior, it'll work a lot better!

also, love the arial shot. stock or did you have access to a chopper?? nice either way.

I agree

Hey man,
thanks - thats a wicked suggestion for color correction. the current scene is not graded yet and I will keep the look you showed in that photoshop file in mind while grading. In answer to the question - aerial footage is library footage shot in the same area that we were shooting our movie - got a good deal from the company, so used it. :-)

Also I have put up some behind the scene clips from the production. You can check them out here - thing to keep in mind - we shot this onlocation with 2 DVX102's with natural lighting as we did not have any electricity. We were out of cellphone coverage area and it was an hour's walk into the woods. Enjoy
