Open Water how does it look?

Re: Open Water how does it look?

Shrek is real dude. Don’t you remember a few months ago when the Easter Bunny launched a civil suit against him and Santa Claus for ‘menacing’ and harassment (bogus charges). Yeah the Tooth Fairy ratted them out to the Bunny at a party they were all at (prank calls regarding Thanksgiving Rabbit stew or something). ;D

Re: Open Water how does it look?

My roomate saw Open Water. She said it wasn't good. She doesn't really know that much about video, but said that the image quality looked crappy, and the audio was especially bad.
Plus she said that as a story, it just wasn't that good.

As far as the plot goes, I didn't see it for the simple reason that the plot structure made me cringe.

Act 1: People get left in the ocean
Act 2: People by themselves in the middle of the ocean (doesn't seem very dynamic)
Act 3: People by themselves in the ocean, than die.

You can put Tom Hanks on and island by himself for an hour and a half, but this just didn't seem like it was going to work.

PS. I work at PDI/Dreamworks, and Shrek is TOTALLY real. He comes in all the time and looks at storyboards.

Yea, they makers of that film watched movies like Jaws and said "The hero living in the end? It's been done! Lets put them byu themselves in the ocean for an hour, and then kill them, THAT would make a great movie."

Yes, that sounds pretty logical.

All the best

strictly speaking, to dupe more cinema go-ers , i.e. teenagers they will submit censored print for a PG (akin to your G ratings, I presume) rating.

We now have a NC-16 (violence), an MA(18 ) (fleeting nudity), and a R(21) (if you call that sex?) rating(akin to your PG-13 I think. NC-17 is like totally non-existent here.

why do you think Singaporeans, in general, aren't too keen about piracy laws  ?

So that's how Shark Tale got greenlighted.

Re: Open Water how does it look?

Ok, I saw this movie tonight. And I will say that anyone that is thinking of making a movie and blowing up to 35mm go see this on the big screen. The aliasing was , how can I say this without being to mean. Just plain bad. Almost every frame of Open Water, has horrible aliasing. It is so apparent that you don't even have to look for it. But it just goes to show, as long as you have a really good trailer people will pay to see it. I was glad I went , so I could see first hand how mini dv looks blow up. I assume that the DVX would look better shooting in 24pa...but how much better is the question. I am wondering, if it is possible to get a decent looking blowup from mini dv.

Re: Open Water how does it look?

Id think there wouldn't be much aliasing with a DVX being blown to film - you'd still have an insanely soft picture, but the aliasing is horrid with 60i transfers because they're creating a progressive frame from interlaced fields.

Re: Open Water how does it look?

I hope that sony releases "November" to theaters so we can all see the blow up from the DVX, instead of only a DVD release. But again, if anyone wants to see this movie "Open Water" go to the theater to see it instead of renting.

BTW. Great shot of Blanchard Ryan in the nude..she is a hottie!

Re: Open Water how does it look?

I just saw this a couple hours ago. Gotta agree, it did look pretty bad. But, the shot as well as they could with what they had. It's mostly the technical limitations that hurt them.

Once the film got rolling, though, I forgot about the image for the most part and was just into the story. I don't know how it worked, two people in an ocean for an hour, but it did. I quite liked it.

I'm curious about why it looked bad, though. I've been part of two student film festivals now where we had our stuff projected with digital projectors onto the big screen (Christie projectors, so, not the best, from what I gather, but, I don't follow projector technology that much), and it looked great. None of the problems this film had. I mean, don't get me wrong, it didn't look like film great, or like "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" or "Collateral" great, but MUCH better than "Open Water."

Weird.

Re: Open Water how does it look?

Good question but its nasty as all on the water with bright glare and nothing but horizon.

Re: Open Water how does it look?

what was Openwater shot on??? i thought it was dvx. Is there any movies in blockbuster anyone could suggest that i can see a dvx100a in action? The best example you can think of please!

Cuz i have to say, openwater looked very bad in my opinion.

Thanks, Kevin

Re: Open Water how does it look?

im new. im trying to decide which to get- xl2 or dvx100a

im gonna be doing weddings, but would like to be able to get that cinema look if i want. openwater definitely didnt look cinema like.

thats why i want to know what it was done with.

All the info you want to give would be great!
thanks!

Re: Open Water how does it look?

Well Kevin the thing is this has been discussed in other threads, but heres some answers, Open Water shot with
PD-150 and VX-200, I think John said the director would have wanted to use the AGDVXA but it wasn't out yet or something like that. The budget itself was around $130K. But as far as the cinamatic look I personally think he wanted that look because just look at the story its like a vacation gone wrong, well it gave the video a raw look you know what im saying.

Re: Open Water how does it look?

That sums it up I think. BE sure to check the XL2 threads so you ca begin the long journey towards making your decision
