Open Water how does it look?

Re: Open Water how does it look?

Other than the fact that its cool to see a movie that was shot with a $3000-$5000 digital camera thats playing in the theatres. I think this movie is a waste of money. but, thats just my opinion. The previews stated that this movie made JAWS look like a kiddie film. This movie has nothing on JAWS. I will say that for an Independent film with a small budget (It was ok) But they shouldnt advertise it comparing it to JAWS because there is NO COMPARISION.

But the Marketing did get you to go see it!

I remember paying for Blair Witch and sitting there the whole time thinking "This sucks!" but damn that marketing campaign wasnt a good one, huh?

Ill wait for DVD for Open Water.

Another solid film shot on DV is "Pieces of April". Its the story that hooks you on this one NOT the 'cinematography'.

That's what I've been telling everyone that asks how it was. It's not a mainstream film. Blairwitch had exactlyt the same problem. It made a lot of money, because the marketting was so brilliant, but a LOT of people absolutely hate it. It was never a film intended for the mass market. It's for horror fans. True, honest to god, horror fans.

I'm not sure who Open Water is for (scuba fans? :) ), but trying to make this little independent art house flick mainstream is an artistic mistake (but definately not a financial one, so, an obvious decision, I guess).

We're gonna see the same thing with this. Not as harshly, people won't necessarily hate it, but the audience is gonna be sharply divided.

I'm seeing it tonight, at a drive-in! It should be the perfect venue for a film like this one.

Re: Open Water how does it look?

I thought Open Water was great. I thought the dialog and acting were incredibly realistic. It really felt as if you were watching a documentary. Consequently, I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole time the couple were in the water. Was it Jaws? No. But it's a very good film in its own right, imho. It's another example of what can be done with a simple idea and a low budget.

Regarding the look: In the drive-in it was impossible to tell if it was film or DV. But that was a function of the poor drive-in image, not a reflection of expertly shot DV.
