Note I said "transcode." I know the editing is done with ProRes files, that's not the issue. The issue is I edit most of what I shoot, and I can't be waiting 24+ hours to transcode a large amount of footage on my MBP.
Ok, I understand. Rick, you're clearly a technician, not an 'artist'. DPs and directors choose the camera mainly for its look, for its aesthetic. That's why no one is shooting commercials or TV shows with the AF or the FS100, and they still are with the 5D! Worldwide!
You can search all you want on Canon's papers, but they showed the world what's really about for paid film makers. Aesthetics! And no, a cinematic look its not an abstract concept. For you it might be, but for most DP's its not. They know what a 'cinematic' look is when they see it. I certainly do. As I would never, ever take a chance at shooting a commercial with a FS, AF100 or even the F3.
Squig, are you seriously comparing a Nex with the C300? Most people here clearly don't make a living out of their artistic craft. You can't really make some of the statements here and still be actively working as a DP or a director. Please, no offense to anyone if that's the case, but I find it ridiculous that someone who gets paid for his artistic good taste and technical know how, can actually say the Red One looked awesome or that a Nex its a more worthwhile camera than a C300.
Sorry but I had to say it.
My .02.
Cheers!

+1 on this (Rick's post regarding Nuno). Out of curiosity what's your reason for not wanting to deal with a debayer or 4k resolution?
its probably because 5D is cheap comapred to the other cams.Ok, I understand. Rick, you're clearly a technician, not an 'artist'. The only way I see Canon changing the price is from an all out boycott. If everyone were to say, were not going to buy your c300, but were not going to buy ANYTHING Canon. even a copier, camcorder, alarm clock, whatever. As consumers, we feel we gave you the ability to be in the position your in. We sacrificed for you! Therefore you owe us at least a cam that has the features we need at a price we will pay. And it's not 16k, 13k or even 10k. If you want to sell your c300, it better be 3k. lol Wishful thinking huh![]()
with canon, we are talking TRUE 1080p, since you dont do debayering etc but use a 8mp image to reproduce a "true" 1080p (true here means its like the "true" film resolution: 2k red 2k blue 2k green = 2mp, red would call it 6k. . .)
You cannot be serious, can you?
Internet video camera discussion is serious business...
I mean, take a look at the XF100HD
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/733533-REG/Canon_4888B001_XF100_HD_Professional_Camcorder.html
Same recording specs. Same dual CF card slots. Same color space. Same resolution support in terms of storage. Same image processor.
Additional built in mics. Additional built in lens.
No SDI. Only 1 ND setting.
$2999.00
You want to add SDI, Genlock, okay, then the XF105HD:
$3999.00
So taking all the other technology out, that we have precedence for, we get $16k minus the lens system cost. It just doesn't make sense.
Spot on Rick. Canon needed only to slap in a S35 sensor, maybe add a grand for the "R & D," and BAM! They'd be kings of the indie film making/event world for another 2 or 3 years.
Instead, we got what we got. A wildly over-priced camera aimed at... I'm not sure who. Hard to see large sfx driven films giving up their RED EPICs for this camera. Hard to see lower budget shows/TV productions giving up their Pannys and Sonys. While I agree with those who say Canon doesn't owe us anything, I'd remind them that that's a two way street.
Canon is a lens company as well, they might have just cost themselves millions of dollars in lost sales from this obvious misstep. Countless Canon DSLR owners who have been sitting on the fence for the announcement are suddenly re-evaluating the AF/FS100 - And whatever loyalty they may have had for Canon.
