Only USB 2.0 for PC ?

I have kept a quote from Barry Green saying that

"Don't play around. Go USB 2.0. That is the recommended workflow, that is the guaranteed workflow. If you continue to try to use firewire device mode with a PC, you're asking for errors. It is not a supported mode."

And from Panasonic HVX 200 FAQ

Does the HVX200 have IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface?
Yes, both streaming and file transfer.

Does the HVX200 have USB 2.0 connectivity?
Yes, for file transfer.

So whats the deal here ? Did Barry reffered to P2 to PC workflow only ? It is obvious that USB 2 is not for streaming. Please someone explain, Thanks in advance.

USB 2.0 has worked better for me than 1394 with my PC. Not sure why. That's after trying the 1394 connection on my Gigabyte MB and also trying a 1394 connection on my Soundblaster Audigy. I'm planning on taking my camera into an Apple store soon so I can try testing out FCP. I'm hoping that when I plug into a PowerMac the 1394 connection will work a lot better.....

You said that USB works better then 1394, please define "better" . If indeed firewire has problems with PC but it is the only way of getting footage live from the camera then all of us PC users have a great problem. Or USB 2.0 also works for streaming ? Then Panasonic FAQ are wrong...

You should *not* use firewire to connect to the PC for file transfer. It just isn't guaranteed.

Use USB2 instead for file transfer.

Firewire streaming is a whole different thing. Firewire streaming works fine with the PC.

The confusion comes up when using 1394 Device or USB Device. Don't use "1394 Device" with the PC, because it's not guaranteed. It'll sorta semi-work for a while, but not reliably. Whereas USB Device mode will always work with the PC. And this only applies when you're in PC-DUB mode.

When in MCR mode or Camera mode, the firewire is the only port that's active, and it's perfectly appropriate for both Mac and PC.

Barry,

I have new dual core ThinkPads note book. It came with Firewire and USB ports. So I can use the firewire port to stream into the notebook and then immediately stream out to the scratch disk via the USB, right? (This assumes that one of the PC NLE's like AVID or Broadcast will capture streaming like FCP does and assumes UPS really will deliver my HVX).

I guess the real question is the PC NLE. Also, any word on your Broadcast NLE experience?

I'm waiting to see what you encounter before biting the bullet and going MAC.

Thanks

Yes that should work.

Haven't got Edius yet, it should be there by the time I get back to Vegas, so should have a little time to check it out next week.
