Only God Forgives - from the Director of Drive

I was really looking forward to this but it's getting a lot of negativity thrown at it and that has kind of put a damper on my excitement. I'll probably still watch it just for the cinematography.

Drive was one of my favourite flicks of the last few years. I'll check this out regardless of reviews.

Seems like only a couple people I know don't hate this film. Oddly enough, that means I'll probably love it. Just waiting for it to not cost more to watch on iTunes than at a matinee theater showing...

Drive is one of the best films of the 21st century thus far, so I will give it a watch no matter what the critics say.

Saw it today. Wish I hadn't.

Sucked, sucked, sucked. OGF and the terrible Valhalla Rising (also Refn) have a lot of similarities. Amazing visuals, superficially-cool characters, and a horrible story that descends into pure idiocy interspersed with moments of forced awkward silence, forced violence that feels like a cheap imitation of Tarantino, and dialog that falls flatter than a pancake.

The only redeeming scenes were the bits that had music. (Thanks Cliff Martinez)

Drive or Pusher this is not.

I don't know what everyone's talking about because I absolutely loved it. Already seen it twice in theaters.

I thought Valhalla Rising was great, couldn't get into OGF though, felt a bit forced and the sparsity of dialogue was much better suited to the period and desolate landscapes of Valhalla Rising.

I saw it the other day. Not quite sure what I think about it. On the one hand, it was visually phenomenal and was most definitely intriguing. On the other hand, there are a few moments that definitely will put off most viewers. One part in particular near the end of the film is almost assured to make a pretty large portion of the audience immediately hate the film. On top of that, perhaps the most difficult thing to get past is that there is no emotional connection to the characters. They never at all let you in, which results in a very distant viewing experience.

I do not agree that the film is "stupid", I just think it's a film that doesn't care about the audience. This is Refn making a film of images he personally wants to see, regardless of whether it makes sense to anyone or not. I admire that level of commitment to his own vision, even if I don't understand it.

Art is subjective. He believe in what he does. I admire that as well.

I do admire Refn, but I have to say, for me, his movies are kind of hit or miss. I loved the "Pusher" trilogy and I really like "Drive", but "Fear X" totally sucked. I didn't really care all that much for "Bronson". I thought that "Valhalla Rising" was very interesting, but It didn't really work for me as a great flick. I haven't seen "Only God Forgives" yet, but I will give it a day in court. It is playing at an art house theater here, but I don't know if I can get to see before it splits. Like I said, I do admire Refn, but I kind of see him as a journeyman, very interesting, but not what I would call one of the great ones; yet at least.
