One of the Best Commercials I have Seen (lighting is a big reason why)...

I saw this Nike 6.0 commercial at the bar the other night and it really caught my eyes. The lighting in this is incredible, and it might look basic for some people on here, but keep in mind that almost nothing is really scripted in action sports. You can obviously set up each shot, but you never really know exactly how its going to turn out.

Enjoy...

omg surfing at night. did that once in west mexico, thrilling and dangerous and wild, never again

I guarantee you every talent move and lighting cue in that spot was pre-planned.

You have a pretty good idea of what is going to go down and where the athlete is going to go. It just is hard to precise with it.

To get something like the first lifestyle shot of the snowboarders on top of the pillow line is mostly just being lucky with the perfect weather.

The spot light shot of the snowboarder might be the most impressive one. Whoever was controlling the spotlight on that shot had to be spot on. He cant see anywhere close to the landing. With something like that in the backcountry, you really only have 2 or 3 chances to get it (they got it the second try).

The shots that really caught my eye were the surfing at night and the tracking spotlight shots. First time I have ever seen something like that.

seeing that, gave me 10 ideas.

:)

thats how you know its a good piece of work. its inspiring.

I Like it Looks Nice..... But Would have really cool to see some D.O.F. shots in there

too vague, when is a shot not a Dof shot? If you mean shallow dof shots i think there were a couple small shallow snippets, but for the most part these pictures were beautiful in capturing deep focus, hard light, precision motion. And at 1:10.... ooof no shallow on that shot please..wink wink

This commercial has reminded me I need to update my bo jackson high tops... just a sidenote

Yes, but will it make you purchase a pair of Nike shoes?
the spot is more about baking an epic memory of the brand NIKE into its viewers' minds than shoe design. That being said gonna have to stick with my old wallabees now, spending too much on gear&life. I guess a new set of sneakers could qualify as a biz expense seeing that I do alot of run&gun handheld. (see the brainwash continues...great spot)

Exactly. Big backlights is a staple for dramatic lighting but on the water? How'd they do that? And MOVING the big HMI to track the athlete, very cool and I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Thanks for the heads up.

Tracking people with lights - ever been to the opera/theatre/pop gig - surely follow spot is a known skill (maybe unerated)

I think that surfing is in some pool/wave machine - you kinda get a glimpse near the end

edit.. maybe not the wave looks too heavy and I think that nike firework is on a boat.. impressive

Not just an hmi.... a XEON spot! They are like 18k hmi lazerish spotlights. They can burn you when you are under 50' from them. Instant suntan.
