Hi

Need to purchase a ND filter for 14-140mm lens for sunny days!!
I only want to buy one so which do you think would be the most useful in most situations? ND4 or ND8?

Thanks

I would go with a ND8. It's still only three stops. I'd say the sunny locations I've shot video in average in the f/11 to f/22. A ND8 would make it f/4 to f/8. The 14-140mm is a f/4-5.8 so a ND8 could allow you to almost shoot as wide open as the lens allows. And if you want to close down a little more you can raise your ISO. In my experience, there are many more times that I wish I had more ND than less. Also, I would recommend a graduated ND. I use that far more often than a full ND.

Agree with vealti about the ND8. I usually stack a 9 and 6 in really bright sun. I used the ND9 (tiffen) this weekend at the beach and that was about the minimum I'd want to have.

I wouldn't go to ND8 if you can only get one. That semi overcast/shade lighting will require ND4. I find that I use a single ND4 way way way more often then I use two of them for an equivalent ND8.

I would suggest starting with one ND4, then add a high quality circular polarizer, then add another ND4 to your quiver. I know it's super expensive to do this way, but really gives you latitude in any situations from bright sand and snow to just enough to keep shutter down in the sade.

I think you'll find the ND8 too much for all but the brightest sand/snow with f4.

Cheers,
Pete
