One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

To do the song backwards, it looks like you were doing something called phoneme reversal. In other words, to say the word "came" backwards, you would need to say "make." While these are the same word SPELLED backward, they are the same pronounced backward. Did you write it all out in reverse and memorize it?

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

magicdavek,

I didn't do what you suggest there, but that does sound like a good idea! What I did at first was burn that one song in reverse on a CD and listened to it the entire day before the shoot. Just praticed singing to it, trying to memorize certain parts. I didn't have a plan for the shoot, so I didn't know what parts I'd be singing, except for the very start, I knew that. At school that day, I looked up the lyrics and spelled everything backwards and in reverse order, they were essentially the lyrics to the song in reverse. soo..

Come Up To Meet You
Tell You I'm Sorry

would be ...

yorroS m'I uoY lleT
uoY teeM pU emoC

I was going to sing along and read that at the same time, but I was driving home so I couldn't. I just listened to the song more, got used to it, and did it. I feel now I could of done a better job, well I know I can. I know I could film it waaay more interestingly as well. but it was a good first project, next one will be cooler :)

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

After my post, I thought about playing the song backward and learning to sing along with that . . . much easier and less complicated than phoneme reversal (actually, the phoneme reversal is done automatically when you play a song backward). That's how you were alble to write recognizable letters on you stomach - you probably didn't have to focus so much attention on the singing at that point and could direct your attention to the task of writing.

All in all, a very impressive and entertaining video.

The Scientist Revamped!

After all this talk about the SuperKid and his magical shots, and colour correction in post, I thought "If I'm going to produce footage like that, I'd better learn how to color correct!" So I read about it for an hour and went to work.

I also liked the widescreen. So I made my video widescreen as well. In doing that it enabled me to put some pseudo-camera motion to my shots, instead of having the static-on-the-tripod shots, I get a little creative and move it around. A few more cuts, a couple zooms to spruce it up some more. A little livetype. If you want to have a look, be my guest, I know this topic is almost fully exausted, but since the SuperKid's site is down why not look at another young guy's footage??

Let me know what you think.

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

I liked it but - I kind of preferred the original since it looks closer to the original coldplay vid, which in a wierd way makes it look more pro - that being said - it's still good & It's all practice anyways - you certainly have the skills  ;)

There is one 'Q' if you dont mind - The way you encoded the mov comes up real fast on the web page - it loads ultra fast & plays out while it loads. On my clips they seem to get caught up very quickly & I have to wait until the clip fully loads most of the time before it plays back perfect.

How do you encode your mov's - what with & what settings ?

I use FCP so I guess compressor & QT are my encoders.

;) cheers - when are we to see your b-boying in reverse ? Im looking forward to it.

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Carrington,

Yeah, I know what you mean about the original looking more like ... the original. I just did it for practice, and to learn pretty much. I like how there is movement in the shots now, instead of being all static. And now I just resaved it in it's proper aspect so there is no more letter boxing. I am saving these files in FCP under the quicktime compression cable streaming - medium settings. Seem to work well so far! I think it could be my website, it seems to send stuff really fast, which is sweet.

b-boying will happen as soon as we get a bunch of guys together. I was going to try for this weekend, but it doesn't look like it anymore. Next weekend maybe!

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Ok - Cool - I really like the way looks now - without the black bars 8)

So now I have yet another 'Q' - what did you do - to get the proper aspect ratio - is that set in QT settings before you render mov ? ie: if it is 16:9 or evn say.. . 2:35 - do you just set that in the output settings ? or is QT croping the bars etc ?

Looks very slick now :)

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Hey Colione,

I like the colors and all, but not the new aspect ratio. I'd recommend going back to the larger frame -- it was a lot easier to see and understand what was going on. I just showed it to my daughter, but I had to stop and explain what she was supposed to be seeing, because -- well, you can't see as much anymore!

It's a great video, shows a lot of talent, but if you went back to the taller frame I think it'd be even better. Great job though, and I'm definitely looking forward to your next!

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Carrington,
Yeah, actually the whole purpose of me wanting to do widescreen was to figure out how to save it in that aspect. When I got the camera I filmed some stuff in squeeze, and I coulndn't figure out how to export it properly. I really love film and am really into the idea of recreating it, widescreen obviously is a large part of that. So I figured I'd better learn how to do it properly.
The way I saved it in that aspect is I changed the sequence settings. I think the ratio is 1:2.55 or maybe 1:2.35 I can't remember. It's SUPER wide, I figure if I'm going to learn widescreen tactics I might as well make it W I D E. Which leads me into my next point,

Barry, yeah, I'm not necessarily certain that the wider aspect is better. I did it to learn. I do see what you mean, as it doesn't show as much anymore, I think the case is that it is too wide. It looks like it's a sliver of a frame that's supposed to be bigger, which in a sense it is, because I did not film the footage to be widescreen.
Wow, you showed your daughter?? I'm so flattered! that's awesome.
The older version is still there (along with a bunch of other stuff!), though it's not color corrected. I did both color correction and widescreen at once, so unless I color correct the older version, it's either both or none. The older version is available at

for your daughters and anybody else's viewing/comparing pleasure.

I'm looking forward to my next as well! I only wish I had the time...
