Hey Guys,

Here is a little video I did in one afternoon, by myself. Nothing too snazzy, but it's a first project, I was pleased so I thought I'd share. Comments are welcome. (No professional criticism please, I'm not a professional, in fact, I don't even really know what I am doing. learning criticism is welcome!)

The file is pretty big, 11 megs. Still learning which is the best way to compress files too.

Enjoy!

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

this was really entertaining to watch. i thought it was pretty good. are you in karate?

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

No critisicm?

What to complain about? This is one of the most creative and interesting peices I have seen in a long time! I loved it! It kicked ass. I look forward to more work from you in the future!

I cant believe no one has ever done this in an MV (That I can think of!). I loved it! :D

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Alright! Cool, thank you for the praise guys. I'm glad you all enjoyed it. I was really impressed how the shots turned out on the dyke (all the nature shots) They really looked quite beautiful. It's interesting because one side of that dyke it a muddy, oily, digusting swamp, but if you shoot it just right, it looks like some rocky coasts in Europe. :)

I'm actually a dancer. Hip Hop and breakdancing, that's where most of those moves come from.

And to take away in all of your belief in my originality, the concept of piece has been done before in a music video. It was actually to that song, Scientist by Coldplay. He sings it forward as everything moves backwards. It's really fascinating. I was always really amazed at the video, so I thought as a learning experiance I would try to replicate that effect of moving backwards and singing forwards. It's pretty hard! Espescially when you have to think about writing on yourself. :o

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Nothing wrong with replicating something especially as a learning platform. I thought it was great work.

You mention you are a dancer; curious, are you a filmmaker as well or is this something you were just screwing around with!

Nevertheless, great stuff!

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

John,

Thanks again for the compliment. It's one thing for my friends to be like.."ya that was cooool!", but it's another for other filmmakers to give praise.

Hmm, what am I? I'm a multitude of things, have one thing in common though, creating expressions (is that a lame connection of words? or a cool one?). My main things are dancing and djing. I do both professionally. I'm a student at the university of british columbia taking psychology. Which isn't very creatively expressive, unless you count term papers.

Filmmaking is my newest venture. I have always been into editing and filming since I was about 14, making skateboarding and snowboarding videos with two VCRs. Since my career as a dancer and dj have been doing so well lately, it enabled me to finally buy a camera, as well as a G5 to edit (annnnnd do term papers of course.)

Just making videos and learning right now is my agenda. My time is limited right now because I am graduating from school. So projects that are created are one man, one afternoon things where my attitude is "I have the afternoon off, do I really need to study today?"

I did film a documentary of a dance convention that toured canada this past month. If anyone knows of any documentary resources I would appreciate it. I need to learn how to put 20 hours of footage together.

Peace!
Cole

Check out our Documentary section! Perhaps some dudes in there can be of assistance.

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

He he.. I was like "Djing?  Is that some sort of eastern philosophy or something?"  Then you said you were a DJ and it all made sense.  lol

BTW, did you just learn the words and try to sing them backwards or did you implement some other tactic?

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Djing: A zen like state of meditation where hands move in spiritual perfect 12" circles.

hahaha.

I basically reversed the song and burned it onto a CD, listened to it for a day or two and sang along.

I already knew the song well, so going through it backwards wasn't as tricky as it may sound. It was hard to get the pronouncations right, cause I have to end my sounds with the right mouth shape. I know I could do a better job at lip syncing, but time constraints! It takes a lot of concentration to lip sync backwards properly, even when I was tearing paper, it occured to me a few times "crap! I'm not moving my mouth" hhhaa.

after showing the clip to a few of my peers, I have thought of the next clip ...

Backwards breakdancing.

but not just filming breakdancing and playing it backwards, everything will be normal and it'll all make sense just our movements will be in reverse. playing on the properties I learned here, with a few new creative twists.
maybe I can film it on the weekend!

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Very well done. The cuts looked perfectly professional.

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Really creative video. You've managed to hit a good spot where you're somewhat profound without coming across as pretentious. A really hard thing to do as we've learned from some other things posted on here *cough turning point cough*

Only crit would be the compositions of some of the shots could be improved. Seeing as these are mostly afternoons of you just wanting to go out and film, i understand the lack of planning on a great deal of it so i'm not gonna make a big point of it.

Your editing skill is quite good, entire thing flowed nicely, never felt any jump cuts or odd parts, another thing overlooked in most films.

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Is that Garry Point in Richmond on Steveston? Super Cool, fun to watch!!!

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

I agree Spirit.

Without harping on the technical side (as requested) , this piece would rock the ****ing house with proper DP/Lighting/Dolly's/Steadi's/ and other crap that makes film come alive!

NOw I will go read the Turning Point thread to see what I missed. :D

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

Thinspirit, thanks for the compliment. I appreciate that perspective on what I have done. :)

Seeing as these are mostly afternoons of you just wanting to go out and film

Mostly afternoons? It was one afternoon. Yesterday.
What would your advice be on the compositions though? Where were the shots weak? And how could they be improved?

Stabb_Films,
That's exactly where it is! Are you from around here? Were you like..."whhhat the hell? I know that place!!"
haha.

Re: One Man Cast, One Man Crew, One Manly Camera

That's exactly it... What the hell, I know that place! My girlfriend lives in Richmond off No3 and Steveston. My editing systems lives with her, so whenever I need a food break from editing I drive down the road for some Dairy Queen Cheeseburgers(healthy eating). Good Use of the locations... didn't fear anyone scooping up the camera on your long shots???
