One last Tape question...

Ok so I've been reading about all these tape and cleaning questions lately.
I'm about to order a DVX in the next day or so.
I'm worried about the tapes I use, i can't get the Panasonic tapes very easily, if I went with a brand that is available at say BestBuy, Radio Shack, Ritz Camera places like that. what brand would be the best? And what is the difference btw wet and dry tapes? I didn't realize there were so many differences with tapes out there, I have an old beater cam that I have been learning on and I always just bought whatever was cheapest, but I want to make sure I do it right with this cam!

Thanks a ton for the info!

if you need some tapes that i have used once PM me and i will send you 5 of them for the low low.. or 3 or 2 or...

you can get these tapes from EVS and fleabay brand new any time of the day! just stick with MQ and dont look back. i probably have less money than you and i can afford the MQs.. its called preventive maintenance! use the best tapes you can to do the less damage to the tape path, heads, etc...

Do yourself a favor....you're going to get a quality camera, use quality tapes. Panasonic recommends dvm63mq's. I have two dvx100a's and have an issue with one of them that had to finally be resolved by the factory, and I was using the tapes that were recommended. You can buy these tapes from Edgewise media for right around five bucks apiece. If you have something worth shooting, it should be worth viewing when you are done.

Buck - Stick with the good stuff.

I'm not sure anyone can beat these prices: TapeStockOnline.com

I've ordered from these guys several times and never had an issue. Tapes arrive safely and quick.

Rush - If you can beat/match these prices let me know and I'd be glad to order from you considering everyone here has so many good things to say about EVS.

Hey guys
Thanks for the answers! Looks like I should stick to the Panny tapes! Is there a BIG difference btw the PQ and the MQ...I'll likely be ordering them from Rush along with all the other stuff I am gettin'. Keep the responses coming!
Thanks

I've shot with both and have never noticed a difference. If you are really itching to save a few pennies then go with the PQ's. If you're doing professional work just pass the cost of tapes on to your client as a line item on the bill and never look back. Buy the best - be your best

Hi Sirius, I submitted a request for price matching to my Tape Mananger. We'll see what he says  I have been trying to get the DVXuser MQ price down a little more, so we shall see what he decides.

i can get them for 4.45 off fleabay

i use SONY excellence, cos we have a few Sony cams here too. the shop that sold me the DVX said they excellence are fine (the SONY Premium are very "soft" though) as long as i stick to them and do NOT use Panatapes after.
the most important is to stick to one brand and take the best of that brand.

Check with National Video Tape out of Phoenix. Jennifer Muth. Toll free. 1 866 420 tape. Under $5 for MQ's.

Yeh I'm sure you can but I'm talkin bout reputable sources such as EVS. If I place an order on a Monday morning, my tapes are at my doorstep Wednesday afternoon. "Fleabay" can't be trusted like TSO or EVS.

have you ordered these tapes from fleabay? well i have.. numerous times from the same supplier and in a timely fashion. i was given a track #24-32 hours after submitting my orders. i would say thats trustworthy..

its tiring to hear people diss ebay all the time when there are good sellers on there. my man here is selling his dvx book and DVD on ebay now.. are you saying you dont trust him now that hes doing that?

rush, good hustle on your tape prices!!

Thanks Marctronixx! Always fighting for my peeps! To be honest the EVS guys are so cool I didn't really have to "fight".... Just ask.

As far as ebay, I think I speak for some, including Sirius, when I say that there are good honest people everywhere, including ebay, who are ready to give anyone an honest, quallity product for a sum of money. When you find people like that, including Barry Green, who we obviously know is a god, and trustworthy from a separate forum, then you have nothing to worry about, and you cling to such honest people (mechanics, accountants, dentists) for dear life. However, in every enterprise, there are dishonest people who hide in shadows, and behind "ebay powerseller protection laws" and such things, like if they mention that the tapes have been sitting in the rain for 3 months, even in size 6-point text at the bottom of the screen, then it's YOUR fault as the bidder for not seeing that. I pretty much gave up on ebay for anything that matters. That's just me... I have been taken so many times by the "fine print"... I bought a copy of Windows 2000, said everywhere that it's the full retail version, even had a stock picture of a W2K box, etc.... I figured I can resell a full retail package easier down the line when I am ready for XP. I got the box, opened it, and it was a software CD with a book and a cable. No retail box. Sticker said "must be sold with equiment, not for resale"... I went back to see the auction, and sure enough, 6-point text, hidden under a big red banner that says W2K, it said "OEM version sold with equipment only, no box" Yes, sure, I was a dummy, and I should have seen that, but man, I don't have time to catch these guys on every little trick they have up their sleeves. I would consider that this guy cheated me, but ebay said he was well within the letter of their law, because they don't control how big the disclaimer is, only that it somewhere on the auction. I mentioned the photo of the boxed version, they said, "He mentioned it was for illustrative purposes only." After 3 such experiences, I gave up. I buy stuff from Newegg, PCClub, Bestbuy, Compusa, Goodguys, Circuitcity, etc... No games. More money, but no games, and no " You should have checked the auction". I buy some stuff from ebay now, collectible stuff under $10 that doesn't affect my life, WWII memorabilia, pins, gifts for friends... Again, like I said, there are great companies on ebay selling great products, like the one marctronixx found, but just not for me, not when it matters, unless I personally know who is selling the item.

Hey Rush, those prices are great! Could you tell us how much it costs to ship tapes to Australia? I looked for shipping rate info on your website but couldn't see it...

We have 20 DVX at work daily. They all run on Fuji tapes (DVM60CME). We reuse the tapes up to 20 times before we throw them out. Tape problems? Not really! Head problems? Not very often - we have not yet lost a recording due to tape or head problems.
I don’t think we need to make so much fuzz about the tape issue. Just find some affordable tapes from a reliable manufacturer and stick to them.

Hi Fritz, I would say about $15-20 for 10 tapes using US Postal Service. It also depends on your address. You can send me an email at rush@evsonline.com if you want to give me your full address, and I will give you a rate quote.

Marc - Sorry to ruffle your feathers man. I was not dissing any specific individual. I use ebay for certain low cost purchases. I've just been burned a few times as many others. I know there are millions of honest people selling on ebay. Just as there are thousands of scumbags. That's the difference between ebay and a "business" like EVS, B&H, Newegg... You KNOW for sure who you are dealing with. I'd buy from Barry on eBay because we know who he is.
RUSH - thanks for covering me on this.:)
